Meilin's PoV -

I woke up with a headache and my heart pounding like crazy. I was sick but not with a cold or the flu or anything that gets better fast. I was sick with some unknown heart condition. The doctors did their best to try to figure out what is wrong with me but so far nothing has worked. I got out of bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes, and got dressed for the day.

I had to walk to work since I couldn't afford a car just yet. It was raining outside and I pulled my jacket's hood up, hoping my hair wouldn't look too terrible. I was still fairly far from where I worked when a car pulled up next to me. The window rolled down, "Would you like a ride, you look like you need some help?" a friendly voice from inside the car asked.

I normally wouldn't take a ride from a stranger but this guy seemed trustworthy and I was kinda desperate to get out of the rain so I smiled and said, "Yeah, thank you," and opened the car and got inside.

I looked over to see a fairly tan boy about my age in the driver seat, he had a constant smile on his face, "So, where are you off to?" he asked.

"Oh, I work at a cafe on the corner of Main and Oak," I replied, my heart started to speed up and I felt sick, I hoped this boy didn't notice the grimace on my face.

The boy nodded and pulled away from the curb and into the traffic, "My name's Rollan by the way," Rollan stated as we were stuck at a red light.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Meilin," I replied, trying to keep my voice as stable as possible while trying to slow my heart rate.

This happened a lot and I knew that I would break into a painful coughing fit next. I hoped I could play it off like I had a small cold or something. Rollan cast a worried look at me, "You okay?" he asked.

"I'm fine, I think I might have a cold or something, nothing too bad," I lied.

"I don't think that's a cold, are you sure you should be working?" Rollan said with a nervous smile.

"I said I was fine!" I growled, I really did hate talking about my condition.

I think I might have heard Rollan mumble a sorry as he casts his gaze back to the red light. Soon we were driving again and we weren't far from my work. I kinda felt bad for yelling at Rollan, he had helped me out after all and he was only trying to be a good friend and make sure I was okay. I would miss him I thought between painful coughs. Soon enough Rollan easily parallel parked right next to my work. "Thanks again," I smiled and hurried out of the car before he could reply.

The cold chill of the rain immediately ran through me, only making my coughing worse. I missed the warmth of Rollan's car and his concerned eyes. As I reached for the door handle of the cafe my chest tightened and my breathing hitched. Dizziness consumed my head and I blacked out with a painful jolt to the back of my head as I hit the pavement.

Rollan's PoV -

I decided to wait in the car at least till Meilin made it inside, I was worried about her, she seemed dizzy and she was coughing up blood. That was way more than a cold. Right as she was walking inside she blacked out and fell backwards, hitting her head. I jumped out of the car without even checking to see if a car was coming, I raced over to her. She was scarcely breathing and she looked extremely pale. I called 911 and told them what I had seen. I stayed with her while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, at least she was alive.

The ambulance arrived not too long after I called, the medics raced to help her and loaded her onto a cot. I was allowed to ride with them to the hospital. I had to wait in the waiting room though once she was taken to the ER. I sat worriedly, there were only a few others in the room.

Hours later a hospital worker came up to me, "She's awake and wants to see you," was all the worker stated before leading me farther into the hospital.

Meilin laid on a cot with workers scrambling around her, changing IVs, typing on a laptop, and taking notes. I walked over to her, "Are you feeling any better?" I asked knowing how lame I sounded but it was the best I could think of.

"Kinda," Meilin stated.

"You don't have to lie to me anymore, it's pretty obvious you don't just have a cold," I tried to smile a little to make her feel better.

"In that case, I feel like I just got run over by a semi carrying elephants, everything hurts," Meilin sighed.

I held her hand, "I'm so sorry, I should have never dropped you off, I could have taken you to a hospital or something."

"Even the hospital doesn't know what's wrong with me, apparently this is a rare case that they've never seen before," a small tear fell from Meilin's left eye as she said this.

I whipped the tear away and planted a kiss on her forehead, "I'm sure they'll figure it out and find a way to help you," now tears fell from my eyes.

"You don't have to lie, I know how bad this is," Meilin stated with a sad smile as she gazed up at me, "thanks for helping me and waiting for me to wake up."

"No problem, I want you to be okay, I care about you," I rubbed my thumb over the back of her hand.

"I care about you too and that's why I want you to forget all about me, act like you never meet me, okay?" Meilin asked.

"No, not okay, I can't forget you!" I complained and gripped Meilin's hand tighter, she knew something I didn't and that scared me.

"You have to, promise me!" Meilin sobbed.

"If you really want me to," I turned my head so she couldn't see me crying.

"Yes, now leave and act like you never even heard of me," Meilin gripped my hand back and tried to get me to make eye contact.

I nodded and turned to leave but I couldn't help myself, I turned and gave her a quick kiss on the lips but her heart monitor had already let out a continuous single beep. I sobbed and fell to my knees.
