Chapter 18

Your POV
"What do you mean 'no'?" I asked them thought over the note Teresa had written. "She put new creatures in the maze," I stated, "that's what she meant when she said she made it more dangerous." Newt's grip around me tightened as we laid back down. I shivered at the thought of something horrifying being out there. The good thing is that the doors are closed, we're okay for now. Nothing will get to us.

The next couple of days went by pretty quickly. I continued making repairs and helping Gally build things. Pretty soon a week has passed by. I was working on the room Gally and I were building for me to sleep in, and working on the bathroom we were building beside it. The alarm started blaring throughout the glade again. "Did they come up this soon before?" I asked Gally, yelling over the sound. "No, it's supposed to be a month apart for each greenie!" he yelled in an answer as we ran to get the next victim of Teresa's terror. The box doors opened to reveal Harvey. Tears were streaming down his cheeks as he looked up and his eyes landed on me. "(Y/N)? What the hell is going on?" he asked shakily. I guess I have to explain yet again.
We decided that explaining every time someone came up would become exhausting, so Gally and I built a little sign that explained everything and had Teresa's note nailed to it. We placed it in the ground in front of the box so it would be easy for the "greenies" to see. I don't understand the term "greenie". I get that they're the newest arrivals but so far the only people who haven't already been in the maze are Harvey and I.
I was the one in charge of showing Harvey around. He also asked to set up his hammock close to mine, which was fine with me but not with Newt. I mean it was Harvey's first time in the maze as well. I just want him to feel safe, even though we're not.

Later
Newt called a "gathering". It's some sort of meeting thing? I don't even know the point of it but he said something about re-establishing order. "So, as we all know, Teresa threw us into this bloody hell and changed the maze," Newt started. Everyone but Harvey and I seemed like they had been to a thousand of these. "We need to establish the jobs for (Y/N) and Harvey, assuming everyone else would go back to their old jobs," he said and everyone nodded in agreement. "So, you two, what jobs would you like?" he asked. We had both been made aware of the jobs and what they were. "Harvey is good with crops. He could work in the gardens with you," I suggested and saw Newt tense up. "You focus on what job you want, (Y/N)," Newt said and I rolled my eyes. I wanted the two most important people to me to be friends. "I'll be a runner. I kind of got you guys into this, I'll get you out," I said and he groaned loudly. He looked at me in the eyes and said...... "No."  What?? The?? Hell?? Did he really just tell me no? "Excuse me?" I sassed, causing the other guys to snicker. "Look I know that it's dangerous out there, but you can't say I haven't run before, and you can't say I'm not smart. I was running from WCKD for years and I didn't get caught until you guys dragged one to us. I got to that island myself, I can get us out of here," I said, staring at Newt for a response. He just sighed and shrugged. What does that even mean?

I sat by the entrance, staring down the long corridor curiously. I picked at pieces of grass around me, ripping some out of the ground as a nervous habit I used to always do. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I really want to get us all out of here. I heard shuffling beside me then heard someone plop down, huffing our a breath. I looked over and saw Thomas. "Hey, Tom," I said, sighing. "I think you should be a runner. You can get us out of here, I know it," he said, making me smile to myself. "Thank you," I said quietly. "I'm sorry that your boyfriend doesn't think so, but he's just being protective of you," he said and I groaned. "He's not even my boyfriend, honestly.... I don't know what we are..."

Newt's POV
I was looking for (Y/N) and saw her chatting with Tommy. I wave of jealousy washed over me but I brushed it off. As I got closer I heard what she was saying. "He's not my boyfriend, honestly...." I stopped in my tracks and turned around, limping away. What did I even mean to her? What does she see me as? Why would it matter enough to tell another guy that I'm not her boyfriend? She was probably bloody flirting with Tommy. I felt my stomach twist in knots. I mean it would make sense. They're both the cure, I'm just a bloody crank. Fucking hell. My best friend is probably stealing my girl. My damn girl. Or am I overreacting? I mean, technically, I'm not her boyfriend. I headed to my hut and laid down, I didn't want to think about this.

I heard the door cream open and shut as I woke up from my nap. (Y/N) stood in front of my door, looking at me with a soft smile. "What do you want?" I asked a little too harshly. "Woah, someone's grumpy," she said and laid on top of me. She was so warm. She's like a teddy bear. "I'm not bloody grumpy," I said... grumpily. I wrapped my arms around her and she played with my shirt. "What were you and Tommy talking about?" I asked her and she looked at me. "You're jealous," she stated, grinning cheekily. "No I'm not," I denied. "We were just talking about how handsome he is," she obviously joked, but I glared and she laughed. "We were talking about me being a runner, actually," she said and rolled her eyes at me. "I heard you tell him I'm not your boyfriend... why?" I asked and she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion then relaxed her face when she realized something. "Oh it was because he called you my boyfriend and you're technically not," she said softly as she ran her fingers softly through my hair. "Well how about we make is technical," I suggested, secretly praying she wouldn't reject the offer. I saw the slightest hint of color change in her cheeks as she nodded. I kissed her lips gently, but passionately. She was mine. And I hope no one changes that...
