Prompt: "I can tell you're lying."

The ride to school was all happy and calm until your mom decided to tell you that her and your dad were separating. It was your first day and you were already getting bad news. You felt your hands get shaky and then your heart speed up, causing your breathing to speed up involuntarily. This wasn't something you had ever experienced before. They had been fighting, you knew that, it was just th fact that they were separating that surprised you. It wasn't something that the people at your school had to go through, mainly because all of your other classmates were privileged in every single way imaginable. That included the fact that their parents were still happy enough to coexist peacefully.

You walked into your first class of the day, Latin, and made your way to the seat that you had sit in the entirety of last year to see someone sitting in it. Unexpected anger took over your body and you marched over the kid and tapped him aggressively on the shoulder. He spun around, his blue eyes looking at you.

"This is my seat," you said as he looked at you confused. When he didn't move, you rolled your eyes. "This. Is. My. Seat." One of the kids that was speaking to him before caught your attention and you recognized him immediately. His name was Jared and he had been one of your best friends in middle school, but you both eventually drifted apart.

"(Y/N), leave the kid alone," Jared said kindly as you furrowed your eyebrows at him. You went to protest, but Jared interrupted you. "Let him sit there. Come sit over here, on the other side of me." He gestured towards the vacant desk that was next to him. You sighed, quietly apologizing to the new kid and going to on th other side of Jared. You were against the wall, the only good part about the seat. You leaned your head against the wall, toning the teacher out as she introduced the new student and listed off the supplies you were going to need for the class. It was the same every year: a pencil, a notebook, and a folder. It was your senior year and you had heard the same spiel from her year after year. You noticed Jared turning to look at you every few minutes out of your peripheral vision and he always had the same concerned look on his face. Despite not hanging out for years, you and him had always kept it friendly between the both of you and would always look and talk to one another, so you didn't find it that weird. However, when he did it in every class you had together that day, you were starting to get annoyed.

The last bell of the day rang and you caught Jared's arm before he walked out of the room. You pulled him off to the side and sat him down on a bench that was in the front lobby, which was two steps away from your last classroom.

"Why have you been staring at me all day," you asked as he went to answer your question. You raised your finger, silencing him, and continued speaking. "I get it, we've never had all of our classes together and it's probably really weird for you, but-"

"Are you okay," he interrupted. You felt your face heat up as you instantly stopped talking. "This isn't you. I know it isn't." You bit the inside of your cheek and looked up at him with the same stern look you had before he interrupted you.

"Jared, I'm fine. Just...stop staring at me, okay?" You crossed your arms and started to walk away when he grabbed the back of your backpack. "Wh-what are you doing?"

"Giving you a ride home," he said nonchalantly as he forced you to turn and follow him. "I know you'd probably have to walk, so you're getting a ride in my truck." You huffed, trying to hide your appreciation, and continued following him. His grip on your backpack had turned into a grip on your hand instead and you looked down at it in confusion. You tried to take your hand away, but he held his grip. "Just let me hold your hand."

"Why do you want to hold my hand, Jar," you asked as he shrugged and stopped in front of his truck.

"Maybe it'll make you feel better, shortie." You smiled slightly at the nickname, missing how he would always call you it when he was teasing you. Jared opened your side of the car, letting you get into your seat before he shut the door to get to his side. He go into his side and started the car, the cool air from the air vents hit your face and you shivered slightly. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I just wasn't expecting the sudden chilliness," you laughed as he smiled at you. "So...how's your family doing? I-I haven't seen 'em in a while." Jared ignored your question as he backed out of the parking space, answering you once he was focused on the road.

"They're doing good," he answered as he turned out of the school parking lot. "How's yours?" Your heart skipped a beat at the mention of your family and you hesitated a bit to answer his question.

"They-they're good. Yeah...good," you answered as you heard him scoff. You shot him a glare and he looked back at you for a second before laughing.

"Come on, (Y/N)! I can tell you're lying." You swallowed the lump in your throat as he continued to talk. "You've been angry or sad all day and that's super unlike you, and it obviously has to do something with your family. What's going on?" He had completely pulled over onto the side of the road so that his full attention was on you. Were you really about to do this? Were you really about to confide in someone that you hadn't spoken to properly in 3 years? You sighed and looked down at your hands.

"My par-parents are getting a divorce," you said as you felt tears stream down your face. He sighed and reached over the seat, pulling you into an awkward hug over the center console. Jared kissed your forehead before pulling away, holding your left hand as it lay on the center console.

"If you need anything, anything at all, I'm right here. I know we've drifted and I know we haven't talked in years, but that doesn't mean that you can't come to me," Jared said as he rubbed his thumb over your hand. You nodded as you wiped your eyes with your right hand. "Do you wanna come to my place? We can watch some movies, then we can walk to our diner." You smiled at the mention of the diner. You and Jared would always save up birthday or Christmas money to get yourselves lunch every year and you hadn't been there since you had both stopped talking.

"I would love to. Let me text my mom first, just so she doesn't worry," you said as you lent down to get your phone out of your backpack as Jared started the truck back up. "What movies did you have in mind?" He shrugged his shoulders, still having a grasp on your hand.

"I don't know. Any movie that'll make you cuddle with me I guess." You laughed at his boldness and nodded your head.

"That sounds like a good idea," you said. "I'd love to cuddle you." The smile that spread across his face made your face redden and you smile also.

"At least it's reciprocated," he chuckled as he pulled into his driveway. "I think my mom's home. She missed you." He shut off the truck and got out, jogging over to your side to let you out.

"Well, I missed her, too." You smiled at him as you grabbed your backpack and he shut your door, grabbing your hand again and leading you into the house.
