Jasmine Thompson- Great Escape

"I wanna see what
we could make
of a different life
in a different place
Please convince me that you've changed
Will you be there to wipe my tears away?"

Maia

We drove home and I could tell my dad was nervous the whole time.

"Dad, it's fine." I said trying to calm him down.

"I'm surprised you went from Kevin to Dad real quick." He joked.

I chuckled.

"I'm sorry dad." I joked back.

We got home and I knew it was time to make things right.

My mother and I hadn't been on speaking terms for some time now. I was just hoping that everything would be resolved now.

I parked in the driveway and I got out. I checked and noticed that my mom was home.

I stopped and waited for him to go in first.

"Ladies first?"

"No, this is between you and her. I wasn't there when you got married, was I?"

He groaned then went in. Once he was inside I followed behind him and began to eavesdrop.

"Melissa?" My dad said.

I'm not sure which actions my mom took but I could hear some movements.

"Kevin? Is it really you?"

"Yes. Before you say anything I want you to know that I come in peace."

I heard shattering glass.

"Some nerve you have. You come in peace? You're saying that like we had a little dispute. But no, you've been away for what? Twelve years?" She laughed.

"Say everything on your heart Mel, insult me. Say it all. Get it off your chest. I deserve it anyway."

"You left me with Maia. You abandoned me and your daughter as well. What about the vows you swore to me when we got married. Did you ever think of them? You could've disowned me but not Maia. She didn't deserve this. She lost her baby, she's had to tolerate countless years of bullying and mistreatment. She had no father figure... you left her? And all for what? For a woman you met in the bar? Wow."

I felt it. I felt the hurt in my mom's tone.

"I'm sorry Melissa. I never meant to cause harm. I wasn't thinking. But I'm here now. And Maia, she- she forgives me. And I'll try my best to make up for lost time. And for you. I'm back. And I'm here to stay. I won't leave this time my love."

"Leave my house please."

I decided to go in.

"Mom, don't be so hard on him. Please." I begged.

"Really? Are you forgetting who stayed up with you late at night when you were sick? Who read you bed time stories? Are you forgetting who never left your side Maia? Really?" My mom cried.

She was right. I am who I am because of my mother. She's the one who raised me on her own anyway.

I sighed.

"Dad, go." I told him.

It hurt to see him leave but I guess mom had some healing to do before she could forgive him.
