Beyoncé- I Was Here
"I wanna say I lived each day, until I died
You know that I, been something in, somebody's life
The hearts I have touched
Will be the proof that I leave
That I made a difference
And this world will see
I was here, I lived, I loved, I was here
I did, I've done, everything that I wanted
And it was more than I thought it would be
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I just want them to know
That I gave my all, did my best
Brought someone some happiness
Left this world a little better just because, I was here"Maia
The day I've been working towards ever since the very first day of high school. In our graduation gowns, we sat there. Our senior year had finally reached it's end. I sat next to Cade and to my left was Ember and then Max was next to her. We listened to our principal addressing the ceremony. I just didn't believe it was over now.
We went up to collect our certificates, parents cheering and clapping for their children. Just when I almost felt bad for Cade when he was about to go and get his certificate, his parents appeared.
That's right, Mark and Janelle were right there in the crowd and they cheered. I think they were the loudest out of all the parents.
"Mom, Dad! You came?" Cade said running to go hug them.
"We couldn't miss it for the world sweetheart." Said Mrs Harris
"Our little boy is all grown up now." Said Mr Harris.
We all had one huge group hug and I couldn't stay longer cause it was time for me to give my speech.
I took the stage and calmed my nerves. I took a deep breath and began.
"When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our answers were things like, Astronaut, President or in my case, a Princess. When we were ten, they asked again. We answered rock star, cowboy or in my case, a gold medalist. But now that we've grown up, they wanted a serious answer. Walking into River High, I never knew my life was going to take the twist and turns that it took. But I'm glad it did cause for that reason, I'm here this afternoon. And now that we've closed one door, it's time to get ready to open up another. And everyone's expecting us to be adults. And now the world expects us to always know and take the right paths. Well, how about this - who the hell knows? This isn't the time to make hard and fast decisions, this is the time to make mistakes. Take the wrong train and get stuck somewhere. Fall in love - a lot. Major in Philosophy because there is no way to make a career out of that. Change your mind and change it again because nothing's permanent. So make as many mistakes as you can. That way someday when they asked what we wanna be, we won't have to guess - we'll know." I sighed and thunderous sounds of claps prevailed from the audience.
At least that's done.
After the ceremony, people were socialising and I thought it was the perfect time to allow our parents to meet.
"So... mom and dad these are Cade's parents."
"And mom and dad these are Maia's parents."
When their eyes rose to meet one another, an awkward tension brewed.
"Janelle Micheals?" My mom said.
"It can't be. Melissa Richards?" Cade's mom said back.
"You guys know each other?" I asked.
"Of course, went to the same high school and uh- it's old news." Said Cade's mom.
My mom shrugged. Like she had lots to say but couldn't.
"Yeah old news..."
I made no effort to ask what the whole story. Maybe it's for another day.
The greetings and the welcoming was quite tense since our moms didn't seem comfortable with each other so Cade and I decided to go and make last memories with some of our friends.
I saw Ali, looking lonelier than ever, in a corner.
"I'll be right back Cade." He nodded and I went.
"Ali," I called out.
She turned to face me and wiped a stray tear on her cheeks."Hey Maia. That was a good speech there. It warmed my heart." She said.
I sat next to her.
"Thanks and prior to that, I clearly said it's the time to make mistakes but there's one mistake I can't make... a mistake you made."
"I've made millions, if not billions, which one exactly?"
"The mistake of jeopardizing our friendship. What I'm trying to say is, we can't go back to what we used to be, but you can always count on me. I forgive you." I told her.
She hugged me and promised she'd always have my back as well. We went back to The rest of our friends and Cade announced a party at the Portland Lights Hotel at 7pm tonight.
I guess we still had lots to celebrate after the graduation.
