49: The Aurora

Maia

We sat on the damp sandy beach. Cade's parents were a small distance apart from us. I wore a black crop top and a pair of shorts without any shoes. Cade wore a black vest and black shorts as well. My head was well resting on his muscular shoulder. His hand was gripping on my lower waist. I couldn't believe it. I always saw what auroras looked like in pictures and on t.v. Seeing it for the first time in my life today, on such a remarkable day was mind blowing. It was Cade's birthday and here we were.

The Aurora Borealis

Cade and I gazed at the natural electrical phenomenon. It's beautiful appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky. We were there, stargazing.

"When I look into your eyes, It's like watching the night sky, or the beautiful sunset." He said to me.

"I love you Cade Harrison."

"I love you Maia Blue."

He pulled me into a quick kiss and I hugged him.

"I have another birthday request." He said.

"Enlighten me."

He stood up and stretched his hand out to me.

"May I have this dance?"

"I thought you'd never ask."

My hands were wrapped around his neck, his were literally on my butt.

"Cade, your parents can see us."

"So? This whole body is mine, isn't it?"

I shrugged and smiled at the same time.

We swayed from side to side. He made me twirl. He spun me around and carried me.
When he placed me down, his lips brushed mine. Not innocently, like a tease but hot, fiery, passionate and demanding. I want to pull away before I lose myself but I can't seem to...In this minty moment, my senses have been seduced and I can no longer think straight.

"Maia." He whispers slowly, prolonging each letter as if to savor them.

I smile, my heart fluttering at his voice as I clasp my hands on either side of his face. Never before has my name ever felt so wonderful a one, I think, as I lean in for another...

Before we could get in deep. I felt soft waters dropping onto my face.
Little droplets of water drenched our hair, skin, and bodies. The water droplets began growing larger and falling frequently. The light 'pitter patter' of rain turned into wet thuds as the icy water raced to meet the ground. The sprinkling turned into a torrential downpour.

"Maia, remember the flash flood you talked about when we arrived yesterday?"

"Yeah."

"I think this is it." He said smiling.

Damn. Can this day get any better.

He put his open lips on mine and he allowed them to shut.

The rain floated in gentle waves, as if gravity is a soft music from the Earth, a sweet beckoning serenade. Each drop bequeathed itself unto the cooling air - wet lifeboats in a dry sea. Together they paint a new picture around a glowing streetlamp. Light streams into the rich blue, as if seeking the aurora, as if it is a song to the moon - and in those sacred drops it blooms into a star like those above. Cade smiles, because in that moment, the water and the light have become a golden flower, an echo of life bursting into the night. What a birthday for him.

The pitter patter of the rain created a shield around us.
I love the rain, I always have.

From a distance I saw Cade's parents. They seemed to be enjoying the rain too.
The silver puddles created an obstacle course that only the bravest of us battle. The sky is colourful tonight, I mean everything is some form of colourful, it always has been on days like this.
I sometimes wonder what colour things are when it's raining. Maybe they aren't. Maybe there is only black and white and different shades of in between. That 'in between' the space of wonder, of mystery, is a place that I love. I wonder what goes on outside my world of grey on rainy days.

He kissed me and the world fell away. It was slow and soft, comforting in ways that words would never be. His hand rested below my ear, his thumb caressing my cheek as our breaths mingled. I ran my fingers down his spine, pulling him closer until there was no space left between us and I could feel the beating of his heart against my chest.
