Danny wasn't even aware of the tremble in his voice as he heard Maxx's voice for the first time in three years.
"Hey Dee."
Danny swallowed audibly at hearing the familiar nickname fall from those oh so familiar lips.
"Maxx." His voice cracked and he wiped at his eyes in a desperate attempt to not break down.
"It's been a while hasn't it?"
Without thinking, he nodded. Seconds later, a short, dry laugh escaped his mouth and he cleared his throat before replying.
"Yeah..." He cleared his throat once more and wiped at his face. "Yeah, it has."
For a couple seconds, there was no reply except for the low breathing of Maxx.
"I wanna see you... like right now."
Danny swallowed heavily and leaned back against the pool chair, his eyes focused on where his siblings were lounging in the pool while his Mum and Dad kept an eye on Kylie who had on floaties and was paddling around.
"I-I... I don't... Maxx, I..." He licked his lips and looked away from his family when he saw their curious gazes focus on him, asking nonverbally if he was alright.
Without saying anything else, he got up and headed into the house.
"What about I come over?"
He didn't answer as he climbed the stairs, two at a time, intent on reaching his bedroom before Maxx's question stopped him in his tracks.
"Maxx... Is that smart? I'm about to be matched in a month and if you trigger my Heat the-"
"Then you belong to me. They can't charge you for finding your Mate during the matching process." He explained, cutting Danny off.
Danny's eyes widened at that and he sat down on the stair in shock at Maxx's easy words.
"Maxx."
"I'm coming over. It's about time we talked, Dee. See you in half an hour." Without another word, Maxx ended the call and Danny was left speechless on the staircase before he finally realised what just happened; he quickly got up and ran to his room, intent on righting it before Maxx arrived because it was the only place that they would be able to have a private conversation without anyone butting in.
It wasn't exactly a smart idea but Danny desperately needed the privacy and if he did go into his Heat then it would happen.

Entering his room, he looked around for any messes even though he was a rather clean person. He wasn't surprised that nothing was out of the ordinary, so he sat down heavily on his bed.
