JADE'S POV
"Have you spoken to James lately?" Marlena, the ultrasound tech, asked as she helped me onto the examination table.
"No," I sighed. "Not since our fight the other day."
It shouldn't have been this way, especially not on James' birthday. I should have been celebrating his eighteenth birthday with him, preferably outside the hospital. Well, at least I was able to go for another ultrasound today. I had to have one of the nurses from the ED unit with me, but I was really just grateful I got to get out of the unit for a while.
"I'm sure you two will work it out." She pulled my shirt up and began applying the ultrasonic gel. I shivered at the sudden cold of the transducer, but I soon relaxed and was resting comfortably on the examination table. It was at this moment that I realized how big I had gotten in such a short time. Was I suppose to be showing this much at fourteen weeks?
“Um....Jade?”
“W-what?” I sat up on my elbows, anxious. “I-is my baby okay?”
“You mean...babies? Um, yes, they are doing alright. A little small, but they’re doing good despite your...situation.”
The world around me seemed to stop as I tried to process what she just said. Bab..ies? Like, two? Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god....I hardly knew what to say. One baby was a big enough responsibility, but two? That seemed like so much for a seventeen year old. I mean, twins? That was....a pretty big deal? What would James say?
“Do you want to know the gender?”
“You can tell the gender already?!” I whispered, laying back down. As nervous/terrified as I was, I think I was more excited than anything else. I couldn’t believe it. I was having twins. Not one little angel, but two.
“Uh huh.” Marlena smiled. “Well, first of all, I can see that they’re identical. Now, do you want to know if you’ve got two little girls or two little boys?”
I smiled, nodding. “T-tell me.”
“Well, Baby A looks like a boy, so I think you can guess what Baby B is.”
“A boy.” I whispered, tears in my eyes.
“We’ll reconfirm it at your next appointment, okay?”
“I don’t understand, though. Why couldn’t you tell it was twins in the other ultrasounds?”
“I think Baby B is a shy one. Let’s just say that.” Marlena said before pointing out things like the head, the arms, the legs, and everything else that could be seen at the moment. Oh my god....
I laid there for a few minutes, just staring at the screen. Two sons, I couldn’t believe it. I was going to be the mother of two amazing, handsome little boys, and I knew they would look like their father. Just amazing. I needed to figure out how to tell James, though. He needed to know that he was going to be the dad to two sons. Not one, but two. I wondered how he would react.
“Um, listen, I know James is busy celebrating his birthday, but do you think you could send him to my room?” I said softly as she wiped the gel away.
“Of course.” She said, pulling my shirt down and helping me down from the table. My day nurse, Kathryn, was waiting outside the room to take me back to the unit. I dreaded going back there, but my doctor on the ward said that, depending on my progress, I could likely be released after three months, maybe sooner depending on things.
“Send him as soon as possible!” I said as Kathryn led me away.
“Will do! I’ll contact Dr.Rivers and ask her to inform him ASAP.” Marlena waved before walking in the other direction, down to her office. As I was guided back towards the elevator, I suddenly felt a thousand times better than I had in a long time. I wasn’t completely there, but I was getting just a little closer. I could feel it.
