"Tao po? Anybody home?"

"Come in, Ronette! Welcome home to the Philippines!" my father said after opening the door.

"Papa, how are you two doing?" I took his hand and touched it to my forehead before hugging him.

"God bless you." said my father.

"This is my husband James."

"Where's my beautiful apo?" called my mom from inside.

James came into the room with me, our teenaged daughter in tow.

"It's nice to finally meet you, Papa, Mama." he said in his North American accent. "Jaimie, why don't you greet your grand parents?" My shy daughter smiled at them.

"Ah, you look exactly like your mom why she was your age!" declared her grandma.

"So," my father asked us as Mama took Jaimie to the kitchen. "how long will you be staying here in the Philippines?"

"Oh, just for a month." I answered him.

"But we might stay longer if our schedule allows us to." my husband quickly added.

"I hope so!" said my father, looking at me. "You haven't been home for more than 20 years! And we're really looking forward to spoiling our beautiful apo!" James and I laughed. "So, why don't you take your luggage up stairs to your old room, you must be tired!" he continued. "Dinner will be ready soon."

Twenty-two years. Yup, that's how long it's been since I left for Canada. It's not that I couldn't come home. It's just that I didn't want to.

Twenty-two years ago, when I was 16, I was the campus beauty. I had dozens of suitors back then, and one of them was a certain guy named Cedric.

He was handsome, rich, and everything a young girl might dream of. We went out for a while, but I soon realized that he was also a spoiled, self centered egomaniac who always got what he wanted. He was jealous and possessive, and as days went by, he started dominating me, telling me he owned me, harassing me when I refused his advances, and even tried to abduct me while I was going home from school.

That was the reason why my parents decided to send me to our relatives abroad to continue my studies there. He never got me.

Papa said he never married, that he still kept asking around about me, even on his death bed, when he died of an overdosed about six years ago.

I sighed as I looked outside our 2nd floor window. I used to great my friends from this same window when they come to visit, since it looks down to the front of our house and right outside the street.

I was still staring at the view when I noticed someone standing beneath a blinking light post. I stared at the person, when the light suddenly went out. I leaned closer, trying to see if there was really someone there, but it was too dark to see.
