Your hands were shaking as you reached for the doorknob. You glanced back at Namjoon who was so fidgety and nervous to meet your grandparent.
Today he would be meeting your grandpa. You tried your best to delay this meeting but Namjoon was so persistent that you couldn't ignore him.
You hadn't told him yet about your family history or that your mom and dad left, leaving you with your grandpa. You pulled your hand away from the doorknob and tried to rack your brain for a way to quickly explain the situation before it could surprise him.
"Ah joon," you got quiet, "there's something I needed to tell you."
He smiled and stared at you.
"I don't know why I haven't told you but..."
You started to feel stupid and stopped. You had been dating for 1/2 and year and every time he'd ask about your parents, you had avoided his questions successfully. But today it came back to bite you.
He smile faltered.
"Baby, you can tell me anything. You know I'm not going to judge you."
You grabbed his hand.
He remained quiet, waiting for you to reveal what was bothering you.
"You know, I've never told you anything about my family. The thing is... I have only lived with my grandpa. My mom left because of a drug problem and dad soon after because he couldn't afford to take care of me."
You spat everything out as quick as you could. You looked over his face trying to decipher what he was feeling and thinking, but you couldn't look at him too long. You avoided his gaze, looking at your feet and messing with your hands.
He put his fingers under your chin gently and made you look at him. He smiled at you lovingly.
"Why do I feel like your ashamed of this?"
You laugh nervously.
"Why? You shouldn't be. Life is hard, but you made it through to be the beautiful woman you are."
You let out a sigh of relief.
"I want to meet him regardless of your situation. I want to tell him how I look forward to spending so much time with his granddaughter and how I love her unconditionally."
A few silent tears rolled down your cheeks. You were dumb to think that this amazing, caring man would change his outlook on you because of your parents.
"Thank you," you smiled hugging him.
"Of course, I love you so don't be afraid. Now, let's meet your grandpa."
