I drove to the hospital. They said they were going to take her off her medicines. I knew I was late. I knew two years were much too late to come and apologise to someone. I was an idiot.
I ran into the hospital. I knew her room number, so I ran in there. But I saw someone already sitting there with her. I was late.
I opened the door, still. The person sitting turned. Louis? What was he doing here?
"Harry? What are you doing here?", he asked.
"I could ask you the same", I snapped.
"Mate, I have been looking after her for the past two years. And I am the only person who has visited her in those two years. So, why are you here?"
"Because I still love her."
"She doesn't even remember you."
"Louis? Who's this?", she asked, awake. She remembered him?
"He's a friend of mine. He's Harry."
She turned to look at me and smiled, "Ah! Is this the Harry you were talking about?"
"Yeah. He is", Louis rolled his eyes. "Babe, I'll just go talk to him outside a bit. Yeah?" She only nodded. He got up and we walked outside.
"Babe?", I said questioningly.
"She's my girlfriend."
"Are you fucking kidding me!? She's mine! I love her! Not you! I was the one who helped her through her tough-"
"No! You left her in her most tough situation! You left her! You let her go! Not me! She had Alzheimer's and you let her go! You let her go when she needed you the most! So, no. I am sorry, but you don't love her", he said. "And don't even think about coming here again. She doesn't need anymore pain than you have already caused." He turned around and went back in her room.
I saw her laying in her bed and he sat next to her. She looked at him the way she used to look at me. He said something that made her laugh. She was laughing so hard, she had tears streaming down her face. She got up and said something. Louis moved to sit on the bed with her. She crawled into his lap and put her head on his chest. He held her tightly, so close. I wish I could do that. I wish I had not done that. But it was gone.
I wish I could take the time back and I could hold her like this. I would never let her slip away. But here she was sitting in some other man's lap and I was not even a memory of hers.
So I walked away from her life. Just like I had let her walk away from mine.
