"You didn't tell me."
"I'm sorry."
"Why?"
I look back into James' eyes, "I didn't know how. I'm afraid."
James relaxes his tense muscles, "Afraid?"
I nod and sit on my bed, "Afraid that I'm moving across the country away from all of you."
"Lucy," James sits beside me and starts rubbing my hand, "You'll never lose us. You're our glue."
I shrug my shoulders, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
"And I'm sorry I didn't tell you about my dad."
"Why did you accept?"
He looks away from me and frowns, "He's been trying to get me to go to his law firm since junior year, I caved."
"But you hate law."
"That's life, I guess," He shrugs.
"What do you really want to do?"
He smiles, "Fuck you."
I laugh and hit his arm, "I'm trying to be serious here."
"Me too."
I lean in and give him a quick kiss before turning serious again and waiting for an actual response.
I' m such a tease it makes my own heart ache.
"Aeronautics."
"That has nothing to do with law," I smile at him.
"And yet here we are, 'You're gonna be the new Thomas, son,'" He imitates his dad.
I smile and give him a hug, "Live your life, James, not his."
"I'm trying," There's a moment of silence before he speaks up again, "I got into Purdue too."
"You what? And you didn't tell me?"
"You didn't tell me," He says back.
"Touché."
He grabs my hand and stands up, pulling me up with him.
"We should get back. It's dessert time," He smiles at me.
"It's also time to tell the 'rents," I frown.
He squeezes my hand, "We'll be fine."
"I don't know what I'm more scared of: our parents disapproving or them making more sexual comments than a horny teenager."
"I vote for the second one."
"You're right," I laugh, "They're inappropriate children."
James keeps my hand in his and we make our way down stairs for dessert. Oh, I'm excited. My mom made lava cake. Did you hear me? Lava cake. Today is a great day.
"Whatever happens: apocalypse, table flipping, yelling, just know, I love you."
I smile and whisper back, "Whatever happens: fighting, backstabbing comments, tornado, I love you."
"James, Lucy!" I hear my mom yell, "Dessert."
"We're right here," I say and let go of James' hand when we come into view.
