"Woah, bro."
"Yo, who loves me?"
I turn around to face my friends. I walk closer so I can hopefully hear better. I'd faintly heard that one of the guys had said something but I wasn't quite able to make out who. Something, more like they said they love you.
"I love you cause you're crazy," Ethan smiles to me.
Ethan? Doesn't sound like him at all.
I smile back at him nonetheless, "I love you too."
"Girlfriend right here," Alex interrupts our little moment.
The rest of us laughs and I give Alex a quick side hug.
"I'd never steal your man."
"Yeah, cause you have one," She winks at me.
I wave her off. She doesn't know what she's talking about. For all we know, I just have my best friend back and that's it.
The end of the dance is near so you know what that means. The slow dances were about to play. It was always people's favorite or hated parts of the night. Those 3 minutes have usually been a nightmare for me, but this year things could take a positive turn.
"James," I hear a voice yell from behind me.
I turn to see Lily running up to us. She was wearing a dress that I probably wouldn't even call a dress. It was more of a piece of cloth, if even.
James looks up to see Lily then looks at me who's in front of him, then back to Lily.
"What do you want?"
Lily pushes me aside and stands right in front of James. And I mean right in front of James.
"To have a slow dance with you, dummy."
The music suddenly shifts to the perfect slow dance song. I'm just standing there staring at Lily and James. Wow, guess I won't get my three minutes of fame after all.
James scoffs and pushes her away, "Was it not clear when I told you to never talk to me again?"
"I just wanted to dance with you."
"I'm sorry, Lily. I'm here with Lucy."
"Oh," She turns to me and gives me a fake smile, "You know where to find me if she's too scared to dance with you."
"Why would she be scared?"
"Like she's scared to admit her feelings for you."
And with that she sashays away. My blood runs cold and I can feel the color leave my cheeks. She just said that out loud, to James. Oh wow, at least the girl has guts, I'll give here that.
"Dance with me?" James brings me back to reality.
I nod to him and take the hand he's extending out to me.
"You're not scared to dance?"
I laugh, "Not with you, baby."
James lowers his hands to my lower back and pulse me closer to him. I tighten my hold around his neck. We sway to the music just rocking back and forth, nothing fancy. In this moment, I look up to James' eyes. He's already looking at me and it makes my blush intensify. I snuggle closer to him and take in his scent.
The world seems to slow down while we're dancing, and it's not because it's a slow song playing. Everything seems right, like there's no worries. Pulling James even closer to the point that we're body to body I realize something. He makes me feel safe. Safe and special. Safe to be myself. Safe as in protected. Safe to relax.
