"Lucy."
"Sage."
"Stone."
"Cute."
"Hot."
"You think I'm hot?"
"No. I think that I'm hot and not cute," I backlash.
"Are you not accepting my compliment?" Edward feigns hurt with the hand that was not still shaking mine.
"Nope. You used the wrong word to describe me," I smile.
"Actually, I was just describing your name," Edward smiles back.
"Rude."
"Back at ya," He says and lets go of our eternal hand shake.
"Hey, what did I ever do to you?"
"You liked nerd alert more than me," He frowns.
"You said it yourself, he's bigger than average," I look at him, "And frankly, I don't do average."
"That hurt like a butt cheek on a stick," He quotes a vine.
"I'm sorry you have no man pride... or manhood for that matter."
This was basically the totality of class. Making rude remarks to each other. Laughing about what happened in front of us. Not caring about the lecture we were getting. Oh, and maybe getting detention for laughing too loud.
Edward was new to our school, moving from a few states over. He'd been here about a week. I was too self absorbed to notice that there was more testosterone than normal. He came because his father got a better job over at our town. Our small town gave good job offers? Wacky.
"Look Edward, I have a squad that you must meet, so lunch tomorrow ?" I look up to meet his gaze and smile.
"Interesting. A squad? Never had one of those," he looks pensively.
"If you play your cards right you will soon," I smile even bigger than before.
"I didn't know this was a game," he laughs.
"It's always a game... of love and war," I side eye him and lift my eyebrows.
"Intriguing philosophy," Edward puts his hand on his chin.
"By the way, we answer to 'Couples cult'," I say, the bell finishing my sentence for me.
-*-
The next day I manage to find Edward before lunch and lead him to the table we always sat at. We leisurely take our time, assuming that Stef can get to our spot fast enough.
"Couples cult, huh?" Edward begins.
"Umm, yeah. We're weird," I defend.
"So you're taken? And you want to get it on with the nerd alert guy? What type of disgusting are you?" Edward looks at me perplexed, as if I've sinned.
"Hell no. I'm the single one," I laugh then deadpan, "And don't call me disgusting."
"All your friends in couples and you're alone?" Edward still looks at me in astonishment.
