"Are you ready?"
"This is both the worst and best day of my life."
"I hate that you get to graduate first."
"It's not my fault T comes before S."
I roll my eyes and hit James' shoulder, "I know that."
"If we got married right now though," James laughs, "We'd graduate at basically the same time."
"Dream on, silly boy."
The music begins and I grab James' hand. He squeezes it and smiles to me. I squeeze back and regretfully let go so I can go to my spot in line.
This is it.
"Parents, teachers, students," Edward begins his speech.
We worked on it a lot the other night. I gave him a bunch of ideas to work with but who knows if he actually took my advise. He wouldn't let me read it once he'd said he'd finished.
"We're all here today to celebrate the inevitable end of our childhood. Today is the day we leave childhood behind and join adulthood. I haven't been with all of you for the four years of high school, but I've been with you enough to tell that each and every one of you is a talented, gifted, smart, brave, and confident human being. With all this that we've gained in high school, both academic and street smarts, we start a new chapter in our lives. This new chapter brings college, jobs, marriage, kids, taxes. It's a whole new set of rules out there. We say goodbye to high school today. But we say hello to the rest of our lives."
My eyes start to tear up as I listen to Edward talk. He wrote a speech, one that actually comes from his own heart, his own ideas.
"I'd like to specifically thank a couple of people for making me so successful in the first 18 years of my life. My parents, of course, for always supporting me. All the teachers that have given me an education worth millions. All my friends and fellow students that make me want to work harder and be involved. And finally, Lucy Stone, you are a shining star at this school and you helped me grow into the person I'm supposed to be."
I start actually crying and the people around me pat my back or give me high fives. The rest of the audience starts clapping and cheering.
"Class of 2020, we made it, surprisingly, in one piece."
The clapping intensifies and there's some yelling and whistling that goes around.
We made it.
-*-
"Did we graduate?"
"Hell yeah we did!"
Stef and I are laughing at the incredulous thought that we actually made it past high school.
The cult is all together at our favorite diner. Edward brought Grayson and he fits in perfectly. Grace and Timothy are in front of us and Stef and Chase are beside James and me.
The total rollercoaster that was senior year has now come to a close. We celebrate by eating burgers and fries. Accurate for our group.
"Edward, I can't believe you said that in your speech," I turn to him.
He looks to me and smiles, "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be this happy," His hand finds Grayson's and gives it a squeeze.
I smile at them and nod, "You made me cry."
"Ha, you owe me ten bucks," Grace blurts out.
We all turn to her in confusion and I see Timothy whip out his wallet and hand her a ten dollar bill.
