When Lucy woke up the next time, it was already dark outside and Spencer was lying next to her, awake. "I thought you were sleeping too", she murmured and rolled on her left side so she could properly look at him. Spencer shook his head.
"I couldn't", he simply said. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm much better, thanks. But...what's the matter with you?" Lucy reached out a hand and slowly let it run over Spencer's cheek. He grabbed and then kissed it before he let out a deep sigh. "Come on, talk to me", Lucy begged. She hated it to see that something was bothering him. "You were angry because I brought myself in danger to help that woman. I know, Luke was angry too, but you...you were so quiet suddenly. Something's bothering you."
"I...I haven't told you yet that I...well, I...lost the last woman I loved", Spencer whispered. He bit his bottom lip and seemed to fight for words. Lucy scooted closer and wrapped an arm around his waist. She remained quiet and waited for him to continue. "Her name was Maeve. She was the first girl I really loved and...I saw her only once before...before she got killed in...in front of my...eyes", he stammered. Lucy swallowed hard. She couldn't imagine something worse than losing a beloved person. She had already had trouble getting over Tessa's death. But for Spencer...it must have been even worse. She let him tell her everything. How he and Maeve met, how they talked over the phone almost every day. And how hard it had been for him to get over her death. He told Lucy how hard it had been for him to find peaceful sleep again. He'd been afraid to see Maeve in his dreams and it was pure torture for him.
"And now...you're the woman I love. And I love you even more than I've loved Maeve. You're the most beautiful, strongest and kindest woman and...you're so good for me. You make me happy. You make me smile. And...and the possibility that I could lose you makes me...go crazy. I...I can't stand the thought of losing you, no matter in which way." He pulled Lucy closer now and kissed her forehead. "I love you so much, you can't even imagine", he murmured into her hair.
Lucy tried to hold back the tears while she buried her face in his neck, placing little kisses on his skin. "I can imagine, because I love you at least as much as you love me, if not even more", she replied. "I'm so sorry you had to go through so much pain, Spencer." Her voice was only a whisper now.
"It's okay, I guess. I've...got you now." He kissed her gently and wrapped his arms tightly around her again.
"And you won't lose me ever. I promise you", Lucy whispered. And then, they remained laying there like this for minutes, maybe even hours. It just felt so good to be so close to each other. Lucy could hear Spencer's heartbeat, that was almost similar to her own. She was so glad Spencer had told her about his most painful memory in his adult life and she was even more thankful to have him now than she had been before.
"How's your head?", Spencer eventually asked and although he didn't speak loudly, it sounded like that after all that time in silence.
"Much better", Lucy replied and she was saying the truth. Her headache was almost gone and she started to be hungry now. "What time is it?"
Spencer took a look at his watch. "Half past five", he then said and Lucy's eyes widened. Wow, they had been laying here all night long and she hadn't even realized!
"Hmm...I'm hungry. What would you say to breakfast?"
Spencer's lips parted into a huge smile. "I'd love that. Here or at a diner?" They had eaten breakfast mostly at home but this morning, Lucy felt like having a fancy breakfast in a diner somewhere near. She told Spencer so.
He agreed and they got ready to leave the apartment. Holding hands, Spencer and Lucy walked down the street half an hour later and entered the next diner – which was one of the best, Spencer said. He'd been here a few times when he had gotten back from a case in the early mornings. It was the one that was open almost 24 hours, seven days a week.
After a look at the card, Lucy and Spencer ordered waffles with chocolate sauce and whipped cream, pancakes with fruit and maple syrup, croissants, coffee and milkshakes. "Who eats all of this?", Spencer chuckled when their table was full of plates and cups with food and drinks. Lucy laughed along before she grabbed a piece of pancake and started to eat. It was delicious! And she now realized how hungry she actually was. She hadn't eaten since at least one whole day.
One and a half hour later, Lucy and Spencer were taking a walk through the park. "Oh, my god, I've eaten way too much, I'm about to explode", Lucy moaned as she clenched on Spencer's arm.
He laughed. "It was a bit too much, indeed. But our walk will do us some good." He wrapped his arm around Lucy and they continued their walk for another hour, although it was chilly and looked like it would start to rain soon. Lucy enjoyed the time she could spend with Spencer. No one knew when the team had to leave again for a case. She hoped it wouldn't be too soon. She'd love to have some days or at least evenings with him. Of course, he'd have to go to the office to get paperwork done, but that meant he'd be back with her in the evenings.
Lucy and Spencer had just come home into her apartment, when Spencer's phone suddenly started to ring. "Oh no, not again", Lucy groaned as she pulled away her shoes and hang up her coat. Maybe her hopes had been too high again, she thought.
"JJ, what's the matter?", Spencer answered the call. Lucy was sure that it was a case again. She went to the living room, grabbed a book and snuggled on the couch. Five minutes later, Spencer came to join her. A little smile on his lips. "No case. JJ just asked if I would look after Henry and Michael tomorrow evening. She and Will would like to go out again. They haven't had time for themselves in months", he explained as he dumped down on the couch.
"Oh, that's great!", Lucy said and put away her book. She was glad it wasn't a case. They'd come soon enough again.
"Do you want to join me?", Spencer then asked.
"What?"
Spencer chuckled. "Do you want to join me with babysitting the boys?", he repeated. Lucy's lips parted into a big smile.
"Of course I want to!", she exclaimed. "And guess what? I'm gonna bake them chocolate cookies", she grinned before she snuggled into Spencer's arms and they spent the rest of the day chilling and reading books.
