Five months later
Five months. For five months, Spencer and Lucy were parents now. And they had started to get a bit used to their new roles. The babies were mostly sleeping and hungry at the same time. Lucy could manage it quite well so far. She could feed them both together and whenever she needed help, she knew there were people who helped her. Penelope was there. The whole team was there to help. Spencer had gone back to work a month after the babies had been born. Lucy had agreed. It had always been clear that Spencer would work again soon. "Are you sure that I should go back now?", he'd asked more than once. Lucy had laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him.
"Of course, I am. I wouldn't tell you so otherwise", she'd said. "You need to work. We all know that. Me and the babies will be alright."
And so, Spencer had returned. But it was hard for him to leave his little family when the team had a case. He asked Lucy to send him pictures of the twins as often as possible. And he called or sent text messages more often than he had done before Mateo and Tessa had been born. Lucy thought it was amusing. It showed her that he thought of them and was afraid to miss something that had to do with the twins.
When he was home, Spencer loved to just sit there in the rocking chair in the nursery and watch the twins sleep. He loved to make them smile with making faces. And Lucy found him often in the nursery reading stories to them. And it seemed as if the twins were listening to their dad when they were laying in their cradles, looking around with their blue eyes. Sometimes, Lucy and Spencer put their kids into the same cradle so they were closer to each other. It was known that twins needed the proximity and it was adorable to watch them together. Lucy couldn't wait for them to grow up and see how their bond would.
"Hey, babe." Spencer came from behind and wrapped his arms around Lucy's waist.
"Hey", she said with a smile and turned around to kiss him. "Did everything go well?"
Spencer has had a case with the team in Chicago and now had just come back from there. He nodded. "I'm glad to be back. Are the twins sleeping?" When Lucy said yes, Spencer hurried into the nursery. Lucy followed him. Smiling, Spencer leaned over the cradles, gently stroking the babies' stomachs. They were both laying on their backs, peacefully sleeping.
"Did you have some exhausting and stressful days?", Spencer quietly asked. Lucy held back a little sigh.
"Well, two babies at once aren't easy to handle. But...I managed it." She smiled and leaned against Spencer's shoulder. "I'm glad you're back. I missed you. And the twins did too." Spencer smiled at these words.
"I missed you all as well. It's...harder to leave. I haven't thought it would be like this, although JJ had already told me while you were pregnant." He wrapped his arms around Lucy and pulled her closer. For a moment, they just stood there, looking at their children. Not long until they would wake up again, being hungry.
"Do you want something to eat? We could order something before the babies wake up", Lucy suggested.
"Sounds good", Spencer replied.
An hour later, the couple was sitting in the living room, cardboards filled with Chinese food spread all over the coffee table. "By the way, what would you say if we'd visit my mom next week?", Spencer asked and Lucy let her cardboard sink.
"Next week?"
"Yeah...I thought it's about time for mom to finally see her grandchildren." Spencer put away his food as well. "Are you worried about the flight with babies?"
Lucy nodded. She was indeed, although she knew and she had said that thousands of people flew around the world with babies. But could she manage this? What if the babies would cry during the whole flight? Suddenly, a thousand thoughts were running through her mind. Spencer reached out for her hand and took it. "We can do it together. Okay?"
"Okay. I know your mom wants to see them and it's really about time to fly over to Vegas", Lucy said and her heart jumped in her chest when she saw the huge smile appear on Spencer's face. She knew how important this was for him and she did it with pleasure to make him happy. Somehow, they would get to Vegas with two babies, that was for sure.

One week later, Lucy and Spencer exited the plane that had brought them to Las Vegas. They were both exhausted and incredibly glad to be here right now. The twins were sleeping; Spencer was carrying one in a baby sling, Lucy the other. The couple quickly brought their luggage into the hotel, which was close to the sanatorium and then they went to visit Spencer's mother. Diana's doctor stopped Spencer and his family before they could walk into Diana's room. Spencer frowned. "Doctor, is something wrong?"
"Well, you just have to know, that your mother...she's had a lot of bad phases lately. But you might be lucky, she seems to be in a good condition today", the doctor explained and with a quick glance at the babies, he smiled. "I'm sure she'll be incredibly happy to see her grandchildren."
Spencer just nodded and searched for Lucy's hand. She could only imagine how he was feeling right now. His mother was getting worse and there was nothing he could do for her, except for being there. Lucy had the hope that seeing Mateo and Tessa would maybe help her, though.
"Mom? It's me, Spencer. And Lucy." Slowly and a bit insecure, Spencer stepped into his mother's room. The blonde woman was sitting in an armchair right next to the window and she was staring outside, not reacting to Spencer's words. "Mom?" Now, after he had repeated it at least three times, Diana finally turned around and raised her eyebrows when she saw Spencer and Lucy. While Spencer was walking over to her, Lucy kept standing in the doorframe. She wanted Spencer to greet his mother first.
"Spencer...", Diana quietly said. She obviously was surprised to see her son. "What are you doing here?"
After kissing her cheek, Spencer looked at her with a smile. "Lucy and I came to introduce our twins to their grandma."
"Oh. Oh!" Suddenly, Diana's face lit up with joy and excitement. "Your babies! Spencer, your babies!" It was only now that she realized that the babies were literally in front of her eyes. She got up from her chair, glancing at the two tiny humans.
Spencer laughed. He and Lucy lifted the babies out of the slings and put them both into Diana's arms. She was obviously overwhelmed. With a smile and tears streaming down her cheeks, she looked at her grandchildren. "They are beautiful", she whispered with a shaky voice. Lucy, who had been just standing there, watching the scene, decided to take a picture. This had to be a moment for eternity. She took her phone and took some pictures. Until now, Diana had only seen photos and videos of the babies. Both, Spencer and Lucy, had taken them over those last weeks and months and had sent them to Diana so she could see how her grandchildren were slowly growing. Seeing them now and holding them in her arms must have been the best thing since years for Diana. Lucy realized how fragile her mother-in-law looked. She must have had a lot of bad days currently. Lucy glanced over to Spencer. He was sitting in a chair in front of his mother and the look on his face told Lucy that he had noticed his mother's condition as well. He was worried but couldn't do anything to help her. Except for letting her spend time with Mateo and Tessa. And that was what the couple would do for the next days: Spending as much time as possible with Diana Reid.
