Tears were streaming down Lucy's face as fear tightened around her chest. She was bleeding. She was bleeding although she was pregnant. Something was obviously wrong. "Oh god, Spence", she cried and her fingers dug into his upper arm. "I'm losing our babies!"
"No. No, you're not losing our babies, darling", Spencer tried to calm down his wife. She was still sitting on the toilet, completely out of her mind. Spencer, although as scared as her, now rushed to get dressed and then brought some clothes into the bathroom. "I'll bring you to the hospital. They'll help us." His voice was calm but slightly shaking. Lucy didn't notice it. She was so scared that she couldn't think properly anymore. Never had she thought something like this could happen. How naive she'd been! Of course, things like that could always happen!
In the end, Lucy couldn't remember anything about the car ride to the hospital. She felt as if she was living in a blur while her hands were rubbing over her baby bump. Please, please be alright. Please she thought repeatedly.
Spencer brought her into the emergency room, shouting that they needed help. When a nurse rushed over to them, he quickly explained what the problem was and Lucy got brought into an examination room. Spencer followed them and when Lucy took his hand, everyone knew, this man wouldn't wait outside. They were holding hands throughout the whole procedure of finding out what was wrong.
"Mrs. Reid", her gynecologist eventually started and looked at the couple.
"Are...are the babies alright? Oh, please tell me they're fine", Lucy whispered while new tears were filling her eyes.
"So far, they're fine, Mrs. Reid", the doctor said and both, Lucy and Spencer, let out a sigh of relief. "But you'll have to stay in bed and get as much rest as possible until birth", he continued.
"Okay. Okay, I can do that", Lucy hurried to say and pulled a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. She would do anything that was necessary for her babies to be alright. Even if it meant that she would have to lay around for weeks now.
Spencer nodded in agreement. "And I'll help her with everything", he promised. The gynecologist smiled.
"That's good. The bleeding showed us that you've been a bit too stressed over those last weeks. Have you been working?"
Lucy nodded. "Yeah, I was at my bookstore maybe a bit too often", she quietly admitted.
"And...since I'm working for the FBI, there's been a bit stress as well", Spencer added.
Sighing, the doctor looked at the couple. "Then it's really about time to keep away any stress from you and the babies", he said to Lucy. "I'd like to keep you here in the hospital but I assume that's no option for you?" His eyes sparkled and a little smirk started to form on his lips as he looked at his patient.
Lucy shook her head now. Staying in a hospital for weeks? There was no way she'd do that! Not if there was another solution. "Would it be possible to get all that rest at home?" She almost begged. Hospitals had always been suspect to her and whenever she could, Lucy tried to avoid them.
"It's possible, yes", her gynecologist nodded. "But you have to promise me to stay in bed. Only exceptions would be going to the toilet and taking a shower or a bath. Okay?" Once again, Lucy nodded. She'd do everything to not having to stay here and to still take care of her unborn babies. "And I'll come to check on you twice or three times a week", he continued.
"Of course!" Lucy slowly got up again. She wanted to go home. The shock she has had after finding out she was bleeding, was almost gone now and she was just tired. So incredibly tired. After getting some more instructions by the gynecologist and a midwife, Spencer led Lucy back to the car. They both looked at each other when they sat in the vehicle and sighed.
"I guess I've just aged at least ten years tonight", Spencer quietly said.
"Oh, me too. Believe me", Lucy murmured and leaned back. "I really thought I'm going to lose them." Spencer reached over and took Lucy's hand, squeezed it gently. He could only imagine the fear she must have had during those last two hours. Had it only been two hours? It had felt like an eternity.
The next day, Spencer had to go to work. But it was just paper work to get done and he had told Lucy he'd talk to Emily so he wouldn't have to leave the city for a case. He wanted to be there for his wife, although Lucy had told him she would be fine. There was still Penelope who could come and check on her, or Phoebe. There would always be someone. But Spencer didn't want to hear this. He was overly protective right now – even more than he had been throughout those last months.
"But you can't just let your team down, Spence!", Lucy said. She was sitting on the edge of the bed. Spencer had put on new bed sheets, brought her a cup of tea and some of her still unread books. But Lucy wasn't ready to lay down and get some rest right now. Spencer came back and cupped her face before he started to speak.
"Lu, you and our babies are more important to me", he said with a calm voice. "The team can find someone to replace me for that time if necessary, that's no problem. And they'll understand."
Lucy sighed. "Okay", she eventually whispered and let him kiss her before he gently pulled her back.
"And now start getting some rest. Remember what your gynecologist said!" The tone in Spencer's voice didn't allow her to answer back. So, she grabbed the duvet, put it over her massive baby bump and reached out for a book and the tea. She didn't have another choice anyway. Bed rest it was for her.

"Why didn't you say anything? Do mom and dad know about it?" A bit upset, Luke was walking back and forth in Spencer's and Lucy's bed room. Of course, Spencer had told the team what had happened the night before and that his wife needed a lot of rest right now.
"Luke...", Lucy started, but he didn't hear her. "Luke!" She literally shouted at her brother. He spun around.
"What?"
"Goddamnit, did you just come here to tell me how much you hate it that I haven't told you anything? It's been just last night! So, please shut up!" Her hormones were going crazy, Lucy thought as she looked at her brother's face. He obviously was surprised. He hadn't expected his sister to freak out like this.
"What's going on?" Spencer had come running into the bed room after hearing Lucy shout. "Babe, you need to rest! And that means no shouting as well, okay?" He placed a kiss on her lips.
"It was my fault", Luke quietly said and sank down on the edge of the bed. "I'm just worried."
"Me too!" Out of the blue, Penelope had appeared at the doorframe, carrying a lot of food and gossip magazines.
"Everyone is worried", Lucy said, rolling her eyes.
"No eye rolling here, lady", Penelope said and took in the whole left side of the bed. She handed the magazines over to Lucy. "Let's read all that gossip and eat your favorite ice cream." A huge grin had formed on the technical analyst's lips and Lucy laughed.
"Okay." She took the ice cream can. Banana and chocolate, as always. That she didn't have an overdose yet was literally a miracle. "Penelope, you're the best", Lucy sighed and took a spoon full of the delicious candy. Then she looked up. "I know I have to rest. And I will, I promise. But please don't act like I'm sick or something. I'm good. And the babies as well." She stroked her bump before continuing to eat. Spencer and Luke exchanged a look.
"Alright." Both nodded.
"But don't be mad at us if we just want you to be comfortable and have everything you need. Because that's what we're going to do", Spencer said. Lucy could live with that. It wouldn't be for too long anyway. The babies would be here soon, she could feel it.
