Another week passed since our interaction in the garden. Aides had been so busy with the underworld and its duties, we barley had time to see one another.

I still had made no progress with the contents of the scroll. The dokimi was tomorrow and my spirits were still unsettled.

My hands found their way to the bottom of the paper as I crushed and tossed it to the floor. I refused to be made fool in front of the judges and crowds. It seemed best to reject the title now and not go through with the dokimi.

I couldn't stay here a moment longer knowing I still had to continue with the plan to kill him.
I had no desire to....
I think...my feelings for him were starting to foster.

That's it!
I would barge into his study room and tell him now. My mind could not rest any longer!

——-

"I reject the title!" I yelled, standing rigid at the end of the oak table. "I rather back out now than go through thé dokimi and fail."

He looked up from his papers and stared. His advisors already knew to depart. The last one finally closed the door and their was a peaceful yet dark silence in the room.

He tilted his head so that his curls fell behind his ears and stood to face me.

The silence was our peace.

He walked over to me and pulled me into his chest, his muscular arms clenching my waist. My cheeks turned red with heat, his touch instantly pacifying my anger.

"So this is your desire Kore? To fail?" he growled, taking my chin into his palm. "You wish to go back to earth and be treated like an innocent maiden? Knitting quilts and making tea?" he mocked me.

I was silent as he whispered into my face.

"Or do wish to be treated like a QUEEN? Being waited hand and foot? Having all those fear you. Living in your truth?" he queried.

"I...
I don't know what I want" I stuttered, trying to find the right words to say. I was still upset at his abrupt rejection. It felt like we connected at the garden that day. Every time I tried to open up,  he kept pushing me away. I refused to open my heart to him, only to be rejected once more.

"I'll take my chances and leave now" I stare reluctantly into his orbs.

"You are even wiser than I Kore. I could tell from your character" he admitted, "I know you were not chosen by accident. Your purose was made for this. Everyone teated you like a little girl on earth, but me? I treated you like a queen.
You didnt choose this life, it chose you" he whispered against my neck.

He took in my features as my knees grew weak against his touch. Their was admiration in his orbs.

"Do you trust me?" he asked.

Who would have thought I would be contemplating his words?
And the clarity of his spirit.
The intelligence of his mind.

Maybe it was the way he smiled.
Or the way his lips curled into a frown as he teased me, but I slowly nodded and answered him. "Yes.. Aides...I trust you"

He ran his warm hands against my curls and pulled my jaw near. "To me you will be Kore, but to them? You will be Persophone, Queen of darkness and ruler of the underworld. You will pass the dokimi and rule by my side. Study the scroll and you will find the answer. " he demanded. He saw me for the first time. Not as who I was, but who I wanted to be: a queen.

"But what if I don't find it in time? The dokimi is tomorrow?" He lifted me up to hold my waist near. My arms curled around his neck as we stared into each other's eyes.

He pulled my chin towards his....inches apart we stared. I felt his cool breath on my lips.

Although he hesitated, he finally crashed into my other's lips, his tongue forcibly separating my opening. Our tongues fought for fominance as we wrestled against the table. He moved down to my neck, sucking each area of flesh.

As we continued in heat, visions of my fate flashed before my eyes. I reached to grab the knife from my thigh to stab him, but he grabbed my wrists and held them above my head. We continued to smack in heat for a while until he finally parted. "Not yet" he cursed as he snapped away. He would take me now if he hadn't pulled away.

He laid a soft palm against my forehead, feeling my heat. "You will find it in time Kore." He assured me.

I bit my lip nervously as his gaze pierced my soul.

He looked down at my palms and kissed each of my wrists. "I'll see you tomorrow" he muttered and left the room.  My spirit screamed for him as I watched him leave me in silence.

I cursed his being as I felt the imprint of his mold. How my lips thirsted for his warmth.

I knew I was falling for him.
The beast that I swore to never love.
The darkness I swore to counter with light.
He challenged me not to fall for him. He said he would set me free!
Yet here I was, a puppet under his spell of love.

I was supposed to kill him!
To end the king of the underworld.
Months of hatred and resentment blossomed into desire and longing.

No...
My fate would not be one filled with murder. I refused to kill him...

——-

"Charon" I smiled and waved to him.

"Queen Persephone" he bowed in reverence.

"Please Charon! We are friends" I smiled warmly. He rested on the oar, wondering why I was at the outskirts of the palace near the River of Souls.

"Could you take me to the Lake of Erithrion"

"The king has forbidden it your majesty"

"Am I not as Queen as he is king?" I test his objection.

"Yes your majesty, but—"

LPlease Charon. I have to dispose of something. It will be quick. No one will know we went there...not even the KING" I hinted so he could keep his silence.
He sighed and nodded obediently, helping me into the boat and rowing down the path of murky water.

A few moments passed until we finally reached a path with three forks.

"We are here your majesty"

I nodded and bent to feel the water. "Ouch!" I winced as it stung me.

"Don't touch the waters! These souls will weaken even the strongest of gods"

"I see" I nodded and took heed of his warning. My hands moved down to my thighs to reach for the poisoned dagger.

Charon's eyes opened with surprise, shocked I would have something as volatile in my possession. He knew better than to speak.

I unwrapped the dagger from its clothing and tossed it into the murky waters.

It was finished.....

"Thank you Charon." I muttered as I stared at the sinking metal with disgust. He only nodded his head and turned the canoe to travel back to the palace. He hoped of the boat and tied a rope to the pole near the dock. He extended a warm hand to help me off. We continued to walk in silence until I turned to walk into the gates.

"And Charon?" I piped, breaking the awkward silence.

"Yes your majesty?" he bowed. I refused to face him as I spoke my command.

"Never speak of this to anyone....especially the king"

He remained quiet as he heard my voice but nodded in obedience. "Yes my queen" is all he could say and turned to return to the docks.
