The first day of the field experience was... something else.
Because Bailey normally hung out by himself, Logan kindly suggested that maybe he could sit with one of his friends at dinner. It would do both Bailey and Lewis good to have another friend, and if they spent a lot of time together, Logan could work with the dhampir assigned to Lewis, if there was one.
Luckily, there was a novice guardian assigned to Lewis. Unfortunately, it was a guy Logan had a hard time getting along with. Alex wasn't the best student in the class, and he had a reputation for skipping classes and breaking curfew to meet other students.
But it looked like Lewis didn't quite mind the attention, which should've definitely set off alarms. He had a slight blush across his face, one that only darkened every time he met the gaze of the novice watching over him.
Logan only remained at the table long enough to make introductions before making a brief plan with Alex. They'd keep watch together, but if something happened, Alex was to guard the Moroi, while Logan handled the threat.
He only hoped Chase's day was going better.
——
Chase's day was not going any better.
She'd started her morning with a healthy dose of being trapped in Ronnie's nightmares. It was bad enough seeing things from her perspective, but seeing it from his eyes was even worse.
She and Ronnie shared a psychic connection, one that was rooted in the night they both had nightmares of. It allowed her to sense his emotions, sometimes thoughts, and occasionally get sucked into his head.
Through his eyes, she saw herself, blood caked in her bleached hair and soaking down her shirt, what wasn't being forcibly drained by the familiar face. Ronnie's heart ached, watching helplessly as Ezra dropped the lifeless body and wiped at his mouth.
The two of them made eye contact for a brief moment, and even at that distance, the red in his pupils was glaringly evident.
Ezra made a good decision in choosing to run instead of going after Ronnie. Because as soon as Ezra disappeared, Ronnie rushed over to see if he could help his other friend. It didn't look like anything could be done. I mean, Ezra had to kill her to turn Strigoi, and Ronnie had definitely saw the red eyes.
But still, faith sometimes brought people back. The Moroi saint the school was named after saved his dhampir guardian from death, so why couldn't Ronnie do the same?
His hands trembled as he held them over Chase. All that panic and fear, he channeled that into a hope that maybe she wasn't dead. Sure, he would've preferred to try to save Ezra, but that wasn't an option.
The last thing he heard before he passed out was Chase taking a shuddering breath.
"Another fucking nightmare, dude? Really?" She muttered, rubbing her eyes. Chase really hated waking up dealing with his nightmares. The only thing that made this worse is the fact she wasn't in her own dorm.
Novices had to stay with the Moroi they were guarding as if it were a real job. So for Chase, that meant Harry made a bed for her on the couch in his room, which was a lot nicer than some kids got.
So when she forced herself to sit up, Harry was already awake, giving her a questioning look as he got ready. "You're talking like it wasn't your nightmare."
"Has Ronnie not told you?" She was shocked, to say the least. The two were pretty close, she figured the bond would've been brought up.
"I don't ask about his friends. Hurry up and get ready, we're going to be late if you don't."
—
Guarding Harry was not a fun time.
He seemed pretty closed off, so Chase did the reasonable thing and stayed back. So far, this whole thing hadn't been horrible, but it wasn't exactly fun either.
In fact, the highlight of her day had to be when the adult guardians staged a fake Strigoi attack and she managed to take down two of the four by herself, even though she'd been thrown to the ground pretty roughly. Another student, the one that'd been assigned to Ronnie, took down the other two, but got reprimanded for leaving the Moroi without more supervision.
——
Finally, Logan had to say something.
Bailey had taken a liking to Lewis, so the two of them spent a lot of free time together. Meaning Logan and Alex had to keep working together.
This newest plan had Alex guarding in the hallway, while Logan played near guard in case someone came through the window or something. They were in Lewis' dorm room on the first floor, but the windows had bars over them.
Logan caught Lewis' attention and told him, "Be careful around Alex. He's a slacker and half stoned most of the time."
"He is not. He would've been suspended or expelled for having weed on campus and you know it," Lewis replied, rolling his eyes.
"You've got a crush on him." Logan said it as if it was another fact— and from the way Lewis blushed and kept messing with his little potted plants, it was. "Why do you always crush on people who either don't like you back or are really bad for you?"
"Are you including yourself in that count?" He shot back, a little louder than he meant to. Both of them cast a glance over at Bailey, but he was still in his own little world, earbuds tucked in his ears as he copied Lewis' notes for their shared art class.
Lewis did tend to crush on the wrong people. And yes, Logan was one of them, but Lewis gave up hopes and just wanted to stay friends. Or at least that's what he said.
"Lewis... come on."
"It's almost curfew. You guys should go."
