"What the fuck, Mom? How is that even possible?"

Lewis didn't mean to yell at his mother, but hey, if all of your plans for your future just crumbled to dust in front of you, you'd be pretty pissed off too.

"Lewis, honey... We're all tired. We've been doing this for so long, it's time for us to move on and pass the torch to a new generation." She turned away from him, picking up her travel mug before heading into the living room. "It's not like you'll be by yourself. Aphrodite and Apollo announced their successors too, and-"

"Logan and Harry have to do this too?"

"That's how it has to be."

He trailed after her, pictures of his imagined future already disintegrating in his mind. "Can one of them name Alex-?"

"He'd have to be descended from one of my kind to even be eligible. You're going to have to forget about him eventually. He'll noticed you've stopped aging here in a few years. You'll have to fake your death or something-"

"Mom! Stop. Just... stop it. I'm leaving. Hopefully tomorrow you'll be back in your right mind and we can actually talk about what I was going to tell you."

Without another word, he left, slamming the door shut behind him. When he got into his car, he barely got the door shut before tears were flooding down his face. In fact, he barely noticed his phone going off, but managed to catch it just in time.

"Hello?"

"Lewis, have you talked to your mom-?"

"I'm guessing your dad's went off the deep end too?" Lewis asked, scrubbing his sweater sleeve over his face. "Mom even went on to tell me that I'd have to end up faking my death to get away from Alex."

"We need to get together and talk about this. This is fucking nuts," Logan replied.

"Tomorrow at my place? Alex has to work, so we won't have to worry about him. And... bring Harry."

"Sounds like a plan, plant boy. See you then."

Lewis murmured a soft "bye, love you," into the phone before hanging up. A deep breath and one last wipe of the eyes, then he took off for home.

Alex's car was still in the driveway when he got back, which was definitely a good sign. Lewis hadn't been this upset in a long time, and really all he wanted to do was go the fuck to bed and forget about what happened.

He took a moment to weigh his options before heading inside. He could tell Alex exactly what happened, but that meant explaining more things than he felt mentally ready for. Waiting seemed like a better option, because really, there was no way in hell that what his mother had been detailing would come to pass. It sounded impossible, so maybe collectively, the gods were playing tricks on their children.

When he got inside, Lewis didn't even bother taking off his jacket or kicking his shoes off at the door like he normally did. He went straight on to his bedroom, throwing himself face down on his bed. Maybe he was overreacting.

Alex came in a few minutes later, carrying a basket of clothes, which he put down on the floor before laying on his stomach next to Lewis. "Rough day?" He asked, folding his arms under his head.

"Yeah. I don't wanna talk about it right now."

"That's okay, sweet pea. I'll just get back to putting laundry away, leave you alone for a while-" Alex started to get up, but Lewis grabbed his arm.

"Please don't. Just... hold me for a while. If I fall asleep, you can go do whatever. I just don't want you to leave me right now." He said softly, in an almost scared tone.

And of course, Alex hugged him close, but there was an unmistakable frown on his lips as soon as he was sure his husband couldn't see. Something was definitely wrong, and he just wanted to find out what.

——

Lewis woke up to his phone ringing, and impatient knocking on the door downstairs. So, logically, he answered the phone first.

Before he could get a word out, the pounding stopped, and Logan said, "I used your spare key so we're coming in," and proceeded to hang up.

Lewis groaned and sat up, vaguely recalling that Alex had woken him up long enough to change into more comfortable clothes last night. Thank gods for Alex. He went downstairs, still rubbing his eyes by the time he threw himself down in his chair.

"Sorry, Alex didn't wake me up this morning," he explained. "You know how it is."

Logan gave him a strained smile. "Let's talk about the main thing here."

"My mother said we'd have a week." Harry leaned back, looking as poised and put together as he always did. In the back of his mind, Lewis had the fleeting thought of his own appearance, however disheveled it was.

Logan seemed a bit hesitant to share his detail, but nevertheless did. "Our parents aren't the only ones. It's all of them. All the major ones anyway."

Lewis' additions were minuscule compared to his friend's. But... it was important to him anyway. "My mom's main thing was telling me that I'd have to... give up on Alex eventually, because he's not like us and can't have a role passed down to him."

The three of them discussed plans for what felt like an eternity. At least, until the rainbow shimmered into existence in the middle of the living room. The picture flickered, and within the spray of color, an image of what looked to be a man in his mid-twenties appeared.

He cleared his throat, stormy blue eyes piercing as he said, "If you are viewing this, you've been chosen to take the place of a deity. This is an incredible honor, and keeping with tradition, we've selected a date and time for this transfer of powers. Five days from now, at noon, you will be summoned to a secret location to receive this immense blessing. It doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, you will be brought here. I'd suggest staying home."

The rainbow cut out as suddenly as it appeared. And Lewis couldn't help the shake of his hands or voice as he got up and said, "Does anyone else want a drink? Like an alcoholic one?"

Logan stared at him. "Lewis. It's not even two yet."

"I need a fucking drink, dude."
