You woke up and instinctively reached across the bed for Grizz, only to be met with cold sheets and the same feeling of dread you had been wrestling with since he left on the expedition to find resources. You tried not to let your sadness consume you but it was getting harder and harder to put on a brave face every day when your heart ached so much you thought you would explode at any moment.
A knock at the door pulled you away from your thoughts and Clark was standing with mugs in each of his hands. "Coffee?"
You nodded eagerly and smiled at his sweetness. Grizz had surely told The Guard to keep a close eye on you because they had been hovering around you the past couple weeks, and for that you were grateful.
"How'd you sleep?" You shrugged and rubbed your finger over the rim of the mug, not wanting him to see how sad you really were. You thought you had been doing a good job not to show it lately. "I know it's hard without him."
His comment caused you to raise your eyes and his sad smile said it all. He knew how rough you were taking Grizz's absence no matter how well you hid it. You nodded and let a tear drip down your cheek, pushing yourself into Clark's sturdy frame and his arms wrapped around you.
Eventually you had stopped crying, Clark had left and now you were laying on the bed with your eyes squeezed shut, thinking about the day Grizz had left.
You stood off to the side as Grizz said his goodbyes to Luke, Clark, and Jason. They were squeezing each other tightly and you took a mental picture of the sweet moment. He pulled away and turned to you, his smile lighting up at the sight of you.
"Hey gorgeous," he whispered, grabbing your hands and wrapping you up in his arms.
"I miss you already and you're right in front of me," you whimpered as Grizz pulled you even closer to his chest. His fingers were tracing patterns into your back and shoulders and he laughed lightly at how dramatic you were being. "I'm serious Grizz, I can't do any of this without you."
He pulled away and shook his head quickly, wiping the tears from your cheeks. "Yes you can (Y/N). I won't even be gone that long," he offered but you both knew that he was lying. There was no way to know how long he would be gone.
"Promise me that you'll be careful. If anything happened to you, I don't know what I would do," you mumbled, and wrapped your arms around him again. He kissed the top of your head and brushed a hand through your hair until Bean said the rest of the group was ready.
He pulled away and bent his knees a little so he was eye level with you. "I promise I will come back and when I do life will be so much better, okay? I love you."
He took a deep breath and slung his backpack over one shoulder, sending you one of his sweet smiles before giving you another hug, placing a kiss on your forehead. He winked at you and gave the guys one final wave before leading the group through the opening in the trees.
You had already cried so much that you just couldn't anymore, which was almost worse than crying all day. You just thought about Grizz and all of the horrible things he could be going through right now.
Clark knocked on the door again and peeked his head around the corner. "Why don't you hang out with me and the guys tonight? Nothing major, just maybe a movie or something. It would be good for you." He noticed your hesitation and it was as if he could read your mind. "You're allowed to have fun (Y/N)."
You nodded and he left so you could finally change out of the pajamas you had been wearing for the past week and a half. Walking to the dresser, you pulled out a pair of jeans and one of Grizz's football sweatshirts, smiling at the small comfort it brought.
Even though you were just going to to downstairs to the couch, you decided to wear the ring Grizz had gotten you for your birthday this year. You hadn't worn it in awhile since the only places you went were the bathroom and kitchen but you missed seeing the sparkling gemstone on your finger.
All thoughts of the ring were pushed aside when you opened the jewelry box because inside were dozens of Polaroid pictures. Tears sprang to your eyes as you began flipping through them, walking back to the bed and sitting down.
The one on top was from your first date which had been a picnic in the local park. You had seen this picture thousands of times because Grizz always kept it in his wallet and it was one of your favorites you had ever taken together. The next was one from the same night that you had never realized he had taken, you laying on your back and pointing up at the sky, probably at a shooting star judging by the look of shock on your face.
The next few were your birthday party last year. Both of you wearing the typical party hats and sticking your tongues out at the camera, one of you with icing on your nose which Grizz had so lovingly put there, one of you kissing Grizz on the cheek that one of your friends had probably taken.
They went on and on, random pictures that brought back heaps of memories. You had never realized Grizz had taken all of these and couldn't help but smile at his thoughtfulness.
The floorboards outside the door creaked but you couldn't tear yourself away from the pictures to look up. "Give me a second Clark, you have to come see these pictures Grizz left me," you whispered in awe.
"Well wasn't that nice of him? You must have the best boyfriend in the world." You froze at the voice and slowly looked up to see Grizz with his backpack at his feet and his arms wide open.
You leapt off the bed and ran to him, jumping into his arms and squeezing him tightly. His face looked thinner than it did when he had left and there were noticeable bags under his eyes but he looked happy and more perfect than ever. "You're back," was all you could manage to say and he threw his head back with a laugh.
"Did you doubt that I would come back? I couldn't just leave you like that," he said, kissing the top of your head. He walked over and picked up a few of the pictures, smiling down at them before looking back to you. "Do you like them? I never realized I had taken so many until I was collecting them all for you."
You nodded and wrapped your arms around his waist. "I love them. And I love you."
"I love you so much more (Y/N)," he said with a smile and wrapped you up in another hug.
