You frowned as you blinked your eyes open. You had forgotten exactly why you had slept sitting up until you looked down to see Grizz still laying in your lap with his face turned towards you.
He looked so peaceful and the usual furrow in his brow was gone. No one would be able to tell he had sleeping problems seeing him curled up into a ball like he currently was. You brushed a hand through his hair and he stirred before blinking his eyes open.
You smiled lightly at him, and he sat up quickly, his cheeks flaming. "God I'm so sorry."
"No, it's okay. Really," you said, trying not to sound too disappointed as he scrambled to get away as fast as possible. "How are you feeling?"
He avoided eye contact as he tugged on a sweatshirt and scooped his hair up into a bun, clearing his throat and mumbling something before he left the room.
You sat silently for a moment and let yourself be sad. Watching him fall asleep in your lap last night had been something that you could get used to. He had shown he felt safe with you and that was a good feeling. Now it seemed like he wanted nothing to do with you.
You slowly got ready and let Jason push a coffee mug into your hand when you made your way downstairs. "Wow, you look like you had a good night's sleep," he said with a wink and you scoffed, flopping down into a chair.
"Yeah for sure." He set his own mug down across from you and frowned at your attitude. "Where's Grizz?"
"He had to take over for Clark at the store. Everything cool between you two?" You shrugged and Jason shook his head at your silence. "No way are you just going to leave me hanging. What happened between you guys?"
You took your time answering him but finally caved when he kicked your foot under the table and made you wince. "He had a nightmare last night and we just talked for a little bit." You wanted to leave out the cuddling part but Jason was waiting for you to continue. "And then he cuddled with me."
Jason's smile was wide and he laughed but stopped when he saw that you weren't laughing with him. "And I don't see why this is a problem? You like Grizz, Grizz likes you so what's wrong?"
It took you awhile to process what he had said and when you did, your mouth dropped open. "Grizz likes me?"
"Well yeah I thought that was obvious since he wanted you to sleep in his room. Does something make you think he doesn't?"
You shrugged again and clutched your mug so you would have something to do with your hands. "I don't know. This morning it was like he wanted nothing to do with me and like he couldn't get away fast enough."
"He's probably just nervous or something," Jason suggested and you nodded. "I'd be nervous if I was sleeping next to a pretty girl like you." He winked again and you rolled your eyes, draining the rest of your coffee and heading to the cafeteria for work.
"Hey girlies!" You smiled at Helena and Becca and grabbed a hairnet. "What are we doing?"
Will poked his head out from the open fridge and waved. "Hello to you too!"
"You were included in my hello the first time," you said with a wink and Will laughed before laying some things down on the counter for breakfast.
You had been working in silence before Helena elbowed your side and began wiggling her eyebrows. "So how was last night with Grizz?" Becca was excitedly bouncing and you hated to keep things from your friends but you didn't feel like thinking about it anymore.
"Good. Uneventful, but good." They took your answer as good enough and stopped bothering you and you all finished making breakfast before people started pouring in.
As usual, Becca was sitting with Sam and you were sitting with Helena and Luke, Jason joining the group when he arrived. You had been talking and laughing with them when Grizz took the seat across from you.
"Hey guys," he said, glancing around at everyone and pointedly ignoring you.
"Hey," you said with your best smile and he raised his gaze to you, blushing and just smiling back. That was more promising than the mumbles you got earlier today. Jason was watching you closely and you kept the smile as you continued through breakfast, only letting it fall when you got back to the house.
You made your way up to the bedroom and sighed, flopping down and taking in the silence of the empty house. Your eyes fell on the bookshelf and you gravitated towards the Cicero book, leaning against the window and skimming the first page.
He had made notes in the margins and had highlighted different lines and by the time it had grown dark outside you were halfway through the book, lounging on the bed with it raised above your head.
You weren't sure how long Grizz had been hovering in the doorway but when he cleared his throat, you put the book down with a sheepish smile. "No! By all means, keep going. I'm sure that book enjoys someone different reading it."
You smiled and shook your head. "I'm pretty tired, I think I'm just going to go to bed." Grizz nodded and gave a tight-lipped smile as he watched you turn away from him and curl up under the comforter.
You felt him crawl in later and the light flicked off. It wasn't long before you were asleep and even though you were normally a heavy sleeper you woke up at Grizz's screams.
Your hands found the sides of his face and you forced him to look at you, smiling through the dark. "Hey, you're okay. It was just a nightmare. I'm right here, Grizz. Everything's okay," you whispered and he collapsed onto your shoulder, sobs coming from his mouth.
You smoothed the back of his head and flicked on the light, continuing to whisper to him until he pulled away, his hands immediately covering his face. "Sorry." He sounded so broken and you reached out, pulling his hands away.
"What is there to be sorry for?"
He shook his head and scrubbed at his face. "I woke you up," he said softly and you shook your head, brushing the hair from his eyes.
"Seriously, it's okay. Was it Dewey again?" He nodded and you leaned back, waiting for him to decide to open up to you. You didn't want to push him at all and he finally turned to you.
"I'm so weak, (Y/N). I don't even deserve to be part of The Guard." You rolled your eyes and shook your head but he kept rambling. "And even worse you see how weak I am and I'm just so embarrassed.
"Grizz, stop. You are not weak. Traumatized maybe, but not weak. I seriously care about you and I don't want you to push me away," you said and he gave a slight nod. "Come here."
He hesitated as you patted your lap, but he was exhausted and having you so close had made him feel so much better. You pulled the comforter back up over him and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
"I'm sorry I was weird today," he said and you nodded.
You took a deep breath as you ran a hand through his hair. "I get it but don't do it again. I'm serious, I really care about you."
"I care about you too," he whispered before drifting off and you couldn't help but smile, so content with Grizz curled in your lap and with knowing he cared about you too.
