"Can you please focus? I really need help with this calculus and you are the only person in the class who has a clue what's going on," Becca whined, snapping you out of your trance.
For the past ten minutes, Grizz and Sam had been joking about something and hearing Sam's laughter was like music to your ears. He hardly ever talked but when he did you hung on his every word.
"Right, sorry. Which number are we on?" You pulled Becca's book towards you and noticed the smirk on her face. "What?"
"I think the only numbers you're concerned with now are the digits to that boy's phone number," she said in a sing-song tone, waving her pencil over towards them and you begged her to keep her voice down. "He can't hear us!"
"I know that! But Grizz can," you hissed, your cheeks flaming. "Now you wanted to get this done so bad, let's focus."
Becca nodded and you both tilted your heads down, focusing on the homework until a voice brought you both out of your thoughts.
Grizz and Sam were standing at the end of the table and Grizz lifted his hand in greeting. "Are these seats taken?" Becca shook her head immediately and patted the spot beside her which Grizz took, leaving the empty chair beside you for Sam.
You gave him a shy wave which he returned with a big smile. Grizz signed something to him and he rolled his eyes, signing something back that made Grizz crack up.
Becca and you exchanged a look and he was quick to fill you both in. "I told him that we were saved because everyone knows you're the queen of math and Sam here needs all the help he can get, which were his words, not mine."
You blushed and shook your head. Your thoughts were cloudy being this close to Sam but you tried your best to make eye contact and speak slowly so he could understand what you were saying.
Within the hour, all three of your friends could do derivatives with their eyes closed and Sam was so excited that he grabbed you up in a tight hug. "Thanks," he whispered, barely audible but it was one of the sweetest sounds you had ever heard.
"Of course," you said, trying to push down the giddy feeling and not let him see the blush on your cheeks. He signed something to Grizz before grabbing his backpack and waving to you and Becca.
"Campbell's picking him up and if he keeps him waiting he'll probably just leave him here," Grizz explained with a roll of his eyes and I frowned. How could anybody be so mean to Sam?
"I should probably get going too. Thanks for the help gal pal. Bye Grizz!" Becca sent you a wink before scurrying out the door of the library and you assumed her sudden leave meant she wanted you to talk to Grizz.
He was taking his time, packing up his bag and you matched his pace. You walked out together and he glanced around at the now empty parking lot, his car being the only one left.
"You walk home?" You nodded and he shook his head, taking your bag from your shoulder and throwing it in the back seat of the car. "Not today! Get in."
"You don't have to," you said, hesitantly sliding in the seat but Grizz was shaking his head and pulling out onto the road. "It's past your house though."
"It's fine, really." A comfortable silence fell over the both of you until Grizz gave you a sideways glance. "So, Sam might not have noticed the blush but I sure did."
You picked at a loose thread on your shirt and shook your head. "What are you talking about?"
Grizz smiled and shook his head. "Sam is oblivious but I can see the way you look at him. Why don't you talk to him?"
"I don't know sign language," you said with a shrug. "And anyway he probably doesn't like me anyway."
"He can read lips just as well and why wouldn't he like you? You're smart and cute and sweet and would be perfect for him."
Your mouth dropped open at Grizz's words and he laughed. "You do realize about half of the class has a crush on you, right?"
"You're lying! Stop lying!" You were slapping Grizz's arm and he was trying his best to swat you away.
"I'm not! I think you should talk to him, he'd be excited to know that someone likes him. Even though you assaulted his best friend." Grizz pulled up to your house and you thanked him for the ride before spending the rest of the night contemplating what you would say to Sam, if anything, the next day at school.
The perfect opportunity arose when you decided to spend your lunch in the courtyard and saw a certain blue-eyed boy laying under a tree with his eyes shut. You forced your legs to carry you over and you stood in his sun so you wouldn't scare him.
He frowned at the absence of warmth but quickly smiled and sat up when he saw you standing above him.
"Hi," you whispered and he watched you nervously wring your hands as you sat down beside him. You were trying to organize your thoughts but all of a sudden you had forgotten everything you had rehearsed about what you were going to say to him.
He raised his eyebrows and placed a hand on top of yours and your heart melted. "Okay?" His whispered question calmed you down a little and you nodded lightly.
"Yeah. I'm okay. I just wanted to tell you something." You paused and watched his curiosity, the weight of his hand still heavy on your own and you let the words rush out. "I actually really like you and I've had the biggest crush on you forever but I was too scared to tell you but Grizz said it would be a good idea but I'm not so sure because I'm so nervous that you'll say you don't like me too."
He frowned and you realized you were probably talking way too fast for him so you shook his hand off of yours and signed the only thing you knew how to because you had Googled it last night:
I like you.
Sam's eyes widened and he shook his head lightly. "But I'm deaf," he said and you nodded.
"I'm well aware but you're cute and sweet and I didn't get all this courage just for you to reject me," you replied but he turned away from you, his eyes trained on the ground.
Disappointment wasn't strong enough to describe the emotion you were feeling and you let tears brim in your eyes as you picked up your forgotten backpack and started to walk away but you felt a tap on your shoulder.
Sam's cheeks were bright red as he carefully looked at your face. "You think I'm cute?" You laughed and he wrapped his arms around you in a tight squeeze whispering "I think you're cute too."
You pulled away but he kept his hands on your hips, much your excitement. "So when's our first date?" He beamed and you felt your heart soar knowing you were the cause of that beautiful smile.
