"Have you noticed anything off about Elle?" You were glancing across the church to where Elle was standing with her new boyfriend, Campbell practically hovering over her. Allie, who was completely focused on the itinerary for the meeting today, gave her a quick glance before shrugging.

"Yeah, I think she lost some brain cells because look who she's spending all her time with." You punched Allie's shoulder at the comment and she pouted, rubbing the sore spot you left. "She's probably fine. Why?"

You shrugged and waved when she locked eyes with you. She flicked her wrist slightly, and Campbell followed her gaze to you. You glared at his blank stare, and he grabbed Elle's elbow, guiding her to one of the pews. "She just seems distant or sad or something. We don't hang out that much anymore," you said, and Allie shrugged again.

"Campbell seems pretty controlling. Maybe he doesn't really let her hang out with friends?" You nodded and glared again at Campbell who was whispering something in Elle's ear. He did seem like he was taking over her life, and you weren't about to let him hurt her.

You crossed over to where they were sitting and plopped down beside Elle, a wide smile plastered on your face. "Hey Elle! I feel like I haven't talked to you in forever! How are you?"

She glanced quickly towards Campbell and he nodded, almost as if she were asking permission to speak. She looked back to you and smiled, tight-lipped and so obviously not genuine. "I know, things have just been kind of crazy lately. I'm good, how about you?"

"I'd be a lot better if I could spend some time with my best friend," I said, bumping her shoulder. "Hi Campbell."

"Hi (Y/N)," he replied, sounding bored. You resisted the urge to punch him and sat on your hands.

"Are you guys coming to the movie tonight?" Elle nodded but Campbell shook his head.

"Oh, I thought it could be kind of fun," she said, glancing over at Campbell. He smiled and squeezed her shoulder, and you could swear she winced.

"You can go if you want, spend some time with (Y/N)," he suggested.

You grabbed her hand excitedly and nodded. "Yeah, let's go together! I'm dying for some girl time!" She smiled again, a little more genuine this time, and nodded.

During the movie, she seemed to unwind a bit and act like her old self. She was laughing openly and joking with you and Allie, but as soon as she got back to the house, she was back to being guarded.

"Thanks for coming with me tonight," you said, grabbing her in a tight hug. "I really do miss you."

"I miss you too. It's just Campbell is-"

She was cut off by the door opening and Campbell coming out, his usual evil grin plastered on his face. "How was the movie? You seemed to be gone for a long time."

"We stayed to help clean up. The movie was really good, you should've gone," she said, letting him pull her closer to the door.

"Maybe next time." He turned towards you and waved. "Thanks for walking her home."

You waved back and said goodnight to Elle, frowning as he seemed to usher her inside as quickly as possible. He pulled the curtains closed and your felt your stomach flip. Something wasn't right about the situation and you weren't about to leave your best friend.

You snuck around the house and squatted below the bathroom window, peeking over the sill. Elle was undressing to get in the bathtub, and you looked away with your nose wrinkled; it probably wasn't morally okay to watch your best friend undress.

You glanced back quickly to see that she was now laying in the tub, Campbell hovering over her. She was smiling and looked at ease until he grabbed her and shoved her under the water.

You couldn't contain your gasp and you saw Campbell's head snap over to the window. You were frozen in fear at being caught spying, but as soon as you saw him rip the door open, you ran.

You could hear his pounding feet behind you. All you had to do was make it to a house, then surely someone would see you and help you.

Before you could make it even remotely close, you felt his hand grab the back of your shirt and pull you harshly to the ground. "Where are you going?"

"Let me go," you said, trying to keep your tone rough, but you could hear the way your voice broke.

He heard it too, laughing at your fear and pulling you up from the ground. "But I can't just let you go (Y/N), not after what you saw. You'll tell on me," he growled.

You shook your head, dragging your feet as he continued to drag you back to the house. "I won't! No one will know, I promise!"

"I don't believe you!" He pulled you through the front door roughly, and Elle gasped at the sight of you covered in dirt and crying.

She rushed over to you and wrapped you in a tight hug before glaring at Campbell. "What did you do to her?"

"Nothing," he said, casually brushing his hands together. "I just think maybe (Y/N) should stay with us for a little while." He grabbed a piece of your hair and twirled it around his finger.

"Don't touch me," you whispered, pushing yourself closer to Elle. Campbell chuckled before leaving you and Elle alone. "Are you okay?"

Elle nodded quickly and looked you over. "Don't worry about me, are you okay?" You nodded but she knew you weren't. "You should've just gone home."

"I know," you whimpered. "I'm scared of him."

She sighed and nodded, squeezing you tightly.

Over the next few weeks, Campbell's interest shifted away from Elle and onto you. You pushed him away as much as possible, refusing to talk to him and keeping your head down, probably causing him to be more interested in you. Your friends could tell that something was wrong, but you didn't tell them what was going on, only that you were staying with Elle.

"When are you going to let me leave?" You finally chose to speak to him, and he smirked.

"I've become quite fond of having you here though," he said. He tried to reach for your hand but you snatched it away from him. "Don't worry, I think you'll learn to love it here, learn to love me."
