Waiting out the storm seemed useless at this point. It had been chucking down rain for the past few hours and school had already been canceled the next day because of flooding in the area. All you could do was stare miserably at the rain from Campbell's window.
"Mom says you aren't going anywhere," he said, flopping down on his bed and laying on his side so he could face you. Of course his mom wouldn't want you to drive home in this weather. She treated you like you were one of her own kids because you had been best friends with Campbell since kindergarten.
You pouted and continued picking at the loose thread of your t-shirt so you didn't have to look at him. You hated to admit it but you were scared of thunderstorms and although the thunder part hadn't happened yet, you knew it was bound to and had been getting more nervous as the night drew on.
"I'm sure I could walk home," you suggested, willing the shakiness of your voice to go away. Campbell shook his head with a laugh and walked over to his dresser, pulling out a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt for you to wear to bed. "Thanks."
"Are you okay?" He knew you too well that hiding something from him was nearly impossible but you forced a smile onto your face and nodded before going into the bathroom to change.
You let a few tears fall while you slipped on his sweatpants followed by his shirt and took a deep breath. Campbell had this comforting smell that wasn't from cologne or body wash or anything else. It was just how he smelled and it made you feel a little better.
When you left the bathroom, you went downstairs to find Campbell and his brother Sam in the kitchen, raiding the cabinets like always. Sam turned to you with a big smile, a bag of chips in one hand and an apple in the other.
"Interesting combination," you signed to him with a laugh and he shrugged, setting the food down on the counter so he could communicate with you.
"It balances out I think," he replied and you playfully rolled your eyes at him. Campbell held out the chocolate bar he had just opened to you but you shook your head.
"Are you sure? You love chocolate," he said, frowning at how quiet you had suddenly gotten.
"Yeah, sorry. I'm just feeling kind of sick," you replied, hoping your lie would hold up. It wasn't a complete lie; your stomach did hurt and you were tired but it wasn't because you were sick.
He nodded slowly and the three of you walked into the living room to watch a movie. You settled into Campbell's side and he wrapped an arm around you, instantly making you feel safe and butterflies start to erupt in your stomach. This crush had sprung up when you had started high school and had both moved out of your awkward stages.
Campbell was gorgeous and there were times that you had to remind yourself that he was your best friend and nothing more. Trying to be anything more could cost you the closet friend you had, and that would be more painful than keeping this crush a secret from everyone.
You found yourself drifting off and Campbell pulled a blanket from the back of the couch, tucking it around you and smiling down at how peaceful you looked for the first time tonight. Sam noticed the look on his face and shook his head with a laugh causing Campbell to look at him with confusion. He cocked his eyebrow in question since it would be too hard to sign with only one free hand.
"I just wish you guys would date already. It's torture," Sam said with an exasperated sigh and Campbell looked shocked. "And don't say 'She's just my best friend' because that's not how best friends look at each other. Becca and I don't cuddle and give each other googly eyes like that."
"You're also gay so it's not the same," Campbell said playfully and Sam laughed causing you to stir out of your sleep and just in time for the first crack of thunder. You jumped and pushed closer into Campbell's side, and he instinctively tightened his grip around you. "Hey, it's okay. It's just thunder."
You nodded against him but didn't look up because you didn't want him to see the tears in your eyes, so you faked like you were going back to sleep, listening to the comfort of him breathing. When the movie was over he shook you gently to wake you up, completely believing that you had been asleep.
"Ready for bed?" You nodded and let him lead you back upstairs to his room where he grabbed a pillow and blanket and threw them on the floor. "You can sleep there," he said with a gesture towards his bed.
A low rumble of thunder broke through his sentence and you gave him a tense smile. "That's okay, I can take the floor," you tried but he had already laid down on the ground and pulled the blanket over him. "Or not I guess."
"Night, (Y/N)."
You crawled under the comforter and burrowed down as deep as possible, prepared for the long night ahead of you. However, you must have been really tired because sleep came easily and the next thing you knew you were jolted awake by a flash of light and a deep roll of thunder. You glanced down to find Campbell still asleep, seemingly unphased by the loud noise and bright light.
Taking a deep breath you tried to go back to sleep but you were too on edge, sitting up and burying your head in your hands. You were crying freely now and trying to stay quiet, but the sobs escaping your mouth were betraying you and you heard Campbell stir on the ground.
"(Y/N)?" His voice was deep and gravelly with sleep and he sounded confused as he rubbed his eyes, but as soon as he heard the whimpers he shot up and was beside you on the bed. "(Y/N), what happened? Are you okay?"
You kept your hands in front of your face and shook your head, but Campbell gently pulled them away and swiped the tears from your cheeks. "I'm just scared of thunderstorms because I'm a baby and I'm sorry," you whispered and Campbell quickly shook his head.
"That doesn't make you a baby at all! And there's nothing to be sorry for," he said, pulling you into a hug. The room shook with more thunder and you clung onto him as if your life depended on it. "Shh, it's okay. You're okay, I got you."
"Can you stay here with me?" You didn't care if he thought it was weird. You needed him and you wanted to feel as safe as you had earlier on the couch. He nodded and pulled the comforter around the both of you, laying your head on his chest and pressing a kiss to your forehead.
It was quiet for a minute and you took a deep breath. It was now or never and now seemed like as good a time as any to tell him. "I like you," you whispered and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. You pulled away when he didn't reply but he tightened his grip around your waist and made you lay back down.
"I like you too. More than a friend."
You looked up with a smile and you could tell he was blushing in the darkness.
