The click of the front door closing caused you to blink your eyes open and smile at the sleepy Grizz standing just inside the entrance to the living room. He returned your smile with a weaker one and plopped down on the couch, leaning his head back and closing his eyes."Where have you been?" You sat up and watched him pinch the bridge of his nose between his thumb and finger before he opened his eyes and looked over at you.
"I took Luke's shift tonight because Helena needed him home," he mumbled. He sounded irritated by your question, but you tried to push the thought away; he was probably just tired.
"There's dinner for you in the fridge. I can go heat it up if you want, and maybe we can watch a movie or something? I was looking earlier—" you began, but he cut you off by a quick shake of his head.
"I'm not really hungry. And I'm not in a movie mood either." You tried to hide your disappointment as he shrugged out of his jacket, and you walked to his spot on the couch, plopping down on his lap.
He sighed and reached for your waist, but you grabbed his hands and leaned forward, placing a kiss on his lips. He wrestled his hands free from you and tightly gripped your hips, shoving you off onto the couch beside him. "Grizz, what is your problem? Did I do something?"
"Other than being clingy all the time? God, (Y/N), we don't always have to be together! I need some space sometimes," he said, his voice raising slightly.
Anger bubbled up in your throat, and as much as you tried to keep your cool, your voice raised to match his. "Maybe if you wouldn't always be working and taking unnecessary shifts, I wouldn't act clingy!"
"You're kidding me, right?"
You rolled your eyes and he cocked his eyebrow at your action, challenging you to speak. "You didn't have to take Luke's shift tonight, but you did. I think I probably know why," you said, mumbling the last part, and his head snapped up.
"Don't even start with me. I'm so not in the mood," he hissed through gritted teeth but you let the accusations spill out as if you had no control over them.
"I'm not stupid, Grizz! You and Allie are together all the time, and you jump at every opportunity to be with her!"
"Can you stop being crazy and selfish for one second and listen to yourself? Allie is in actual danger and if anything happens to her it's going to be a lot more tough around here than it already it!" He slammed his hand against the doorframe and you jumped, shrinking back against the couch.
It was rare that you ever had a fight about something serious and he had never raised his voice at you before. As soon as he saw the tears rolling down your cheeks, his face softened and he reached out for your hand, but you stood up and shook your head quickly.
"You're right. I am being selfish, I'm sorry. It's not like I get scared here by myself when you're at Allie's," you whispered, getting up and starting to walk away.
"Hey, I'm sorry. Please," Grizz said, his tone soft now as he reached out for your arm, but you pulled from his grip and walked quickly to the bedroom, locking the door behind you. He was there in less than a second, turning the knob and knocking. "We need to talk about this. Don't shut me out, (Y/N)."
You ignored him, laying down on the bed and letting the tears freely run down your cheeks. Grizz had finally given up trying to get in and the room was completely silent save for your muffled sobs.
Once you had calmed down, you walked back to the door and tentatively reached for the knob. You wanted to just avoid Grizz the rest of the night but knew that it probably wasn't the most adult thing to do. In a burst of confidence, you opened the door and Grizz fell back against your legs.
He jumped up and immediately wrapped his arms around you in a tight grip as if he was afraid you would slam the door in his face again. As much as you wanted to shove him away, you melted into his chest and squeezed him tightly.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered into your hair as a fresh batch of tears pricked your eyes. "I didn't mean any of those things I said about you. I don't know what I was thinking."
You pulled away and he brushed a tear off your cheek. "You're tired. You've been taking a lot of shifts and I was being clingy. I'm the one who should be sorry."
Grizz's hands fell to your hips and he shook his head quickly. "Stop, you are not being clingy. And it hurts me to know that you think I would ever cheat on you. I was trying to be the hero and take all of the odd jobs no one else was picking up, but you need me more than anyone else does. I wish you would've told me how you felt sooner."
"I didn't want to be the reason you weren't taking shifts for The Guard. And the whole Allie thing was stupid, I don't know why I even said that. I guess I wanted to say something that would hurt you as much as what you said hurt me, which wasn't right," you mumbled and Grizz pulled you into him again.
"You are the most important thing to me right now. Don't ever forget that. I'm going to be here every night from now on, okay? You're safe," he whispered, placing a kiss on your forehead.
You smiled and tested his mood to see if he was really okay. "Maybe I could be part of The Guard? I don't want you to stop taking night shifts because of me. You know, I took karate for a couple of weeks when I was in junior high."
"Yeah, yeah, you're tougher than me. God, you always rub that in my face don't you?" The playful tone was like music to your ears and his sweet smile made all of the tension and anger from earlier melt away.
After he changed into pajamas and crawled into bed you immediately tucked yourself tightly against him. "Let's never fight again," you said and glanced up to see him smiling down at you.
"Great idea," he said, wrapping his arms around you. "Now, how about that movie you were talking about?"
