Clark had it all planned out. He was going to tell (Y/N) that he liked her the night of graduation. He didn't seem like much of a romantic on the surface, but he imagined leaning over to her right before they threw their caps and telling her how he really felt. Now that they were in the mess they were currently in, he knew that would never happen.

"What are you thinking about?" Clark shook his head and glanced down at where she was laying on his lap, a book held above her head. "Looked pretty serious."

"Graduation," he replied. Not totally a lie, he just left out the part that he was madly in love with her and had been since middle school.

She sat up and gave him a sad smile. He knew she felt the same disappointment that the whole town was feeling about missing so many "big high school moments," like prom and class elections and graduation.

"At least we are still getting prom," she shrugged, but he knew it wouldn't be the same as it would have been in the normal world. "Who are you going with? Gwen?"

Clark cleared his throat awkwardly and shook his head. "I don't think we're really right for each other," he said, mostly because he wasn't in love with her at all. "Maybe we could go together?"

"Ha, yeah," she replied. "I'm an independent woman and I don't need a boy to take me to prom." Clark laughed at her defiant face and she pouted. "Maybe I'll let you dance with me though."

"What an honor," he teased. "If you change your mind you know I'm here though." She nodded and settled herself back on his lap, making him smile. They were basically already a couple, right?

The next day she seemed distracted as she gazed past him in the cafeteria. "Hello? Who are you staring at?"

"No one," she blushed, but he turned to see Grizz walking towards them. He felt his heart drop as Grizz clapped him on the back and gave (Y/N) a sweet smile. "Hi Grizz!"

"Hey," he said, smiling back and Clark almost choked at the blush on Grizz's cheeks. Since when did Grizz get nervous like that? "We still on for a movie tonight?"

Clark nodded, still in awe of the way his best friends were acting with each other. There was no way they could like each other; it wouldn't be right. Grizz had to know that Clark had liked her since middle school, right?

"I'll see you later, okay?" (Y/N) was waving and walking away before Clark could snap himself out of his trance and he turned quickly to Grizz.

"What was that?"

Grizz looked confused as he took a drink of his water. "What? You're the one acting like you forgot how to act like a human being."

"You were flirting with her." Clark could feel himself pouting, and judging by the look on Grizz's face, he could tell he hadn't just imagined what was happening.

"I barely said anything! I just said hi!" The rising tone of his voice was giving away his guilt as he played with the cap of his bottle. "Maybe I do like her though." Clark bit his tongue and let Grizz continue. "I was thinking about asking her to prom."

"She won't go with you," Clark replied quickly. Grizz looked surprised and Clark tried to seem nonchalant. "She said she didn't want to go with anyone. She's an 'independent woman.'"

Grizz laughed lightly and shrugged. "Maybe she'll feel different if I ask her."

Clark clenched his teeth together and tried not to punch Grizz because it wasn't his fault. Clark never told anyone about his crush so he shouldn't be getting mad at Grizz for actually going after his.

When he got home and saw (Y/N) jumping around the house, he had a sinking feeling that Grizz had talked to her and he wasn't going to like whatever was making her happy. "Did you win the lottery?"

"No," she giggled. "Grizz asked me to go to prom with him!" Clark couldn't help his face from falling and (Y/N) noticed. "What's wrong?"

He shook his head and painted on a smile. "Nothing. I just thought we'd end up going together. As friends," he lied. Actually, he had planned on telling her how he felt tonight before Grizz had an opportunity but he was obviously too late.

"Oh, I'm sorry Clark," she said, hugging him tightly. "I can tell him no?"

"No! It's okay, really. I'll just go with Gwen." She smiled and grabbed her phone, probably to call Helena and tell her the news.

"Can you try to have fun?" Jason set a plastic cup of something in front of Clark and he tried to snap out of his slump. "And can you stop staring daggers at Grizz? It isn't his fault you didn't tell (Y/N) how you felt."

"I know," Clark sighed. He had been looking at Grizz and (Y/N) all night and he couldn't help but be jealous.

"Drink. Being drunk makes everything better," Jason said with a smile. Clark highly doubted it but he chugged whatever was in the cup anyway and winced at the burning feeling.

He smiled at (Y/N) walking towards him, holding out her hands. "C'mon! I think I promised you we could dance?"

Clark smiled and Grizz switched him places. "You look beautiful," Clark said, grabbing her hands and leading her back out to the floor. The song was upbeat and it lifted his mood to dance goofily with his best friend.

"And you look handsome," she said. She was beaming up at him and he didn't remember the last time she had looked this happy. "Where's Gwen?"

"Haven't seen her for awhile," he said with a shrug. "And I honestly don't care where she is."

(Y/N) gave him a surprised look but didn't ask questions. The song melted into a slow one and she started to walk away, but Clark pulled her in close, much to her surprise.

The alcohol was coursing through him and making him feel bolder, fueling the next words that came from his mouth. "I love you."

She smiled and squeezed his hand. "I love you too dude."

"No, not in a dude way. In an 'I want to spend the rest of my life with you' kind of way." Her shocked expression didn't stop him from continuing. "You're here with Grizz because you probably like him but I just need you to know that I love you and I have for a really long time. I was just too scared to tell you."

Grizz walked up behind (Y/N) and gently laid a hand on her arm. "Clark, don't make this weird."

"I'm not!" (Y/N)'s face looked sad as he continued talking, no filter in place. "You probably don't feel the same way about me but I just really wanted you to know," he finished, his face on fire.

"Clark," she whispered, and with that one word, he knew she didn't feel the same. "I care about you so much, but not in that way. Please don't be mad."

He shook his head and looked at the floor. "I know. It's okay. Enjoy your prom, you deserve it."
