Your body's circadian cycle never failed to wake you up at eight o'clock in the morning, probably stemming from all those years of school, but now in these unprecedented times, it was becoming more of an annoyance than anything. You rolled over carefully and smiled at the sleeping Grizz beside you. It wasn't odd to have him sleeping in your bed; it's just what best friends do. He had always slept with you in your twin bed during sleepovers, curled up extremely close to you. Now that the whole world seemed to be a mess, this was one nice thing that remained normal.
His brows furrowed as he slowly blinked his eyes open and yawned. "Good morning Grizzly bear," you whispered, and he smiled at the nickname you had given him.
"I don't even remember falling asleep last night," he said through another yawn.
You shook your head and sat up, his hand that had been resting on your hip falling. "I don't even remember how that episode ended." You had gotten into the habit of watching soap opera re-runs because that was basically all that was on TV.
"What a shame," Grizz teased. He thought they were dumb but he still sometimes watched them with you at night. "We'll probably see it again tonight."
You smacked him, making him laugh as he stood up and pulled off his shirt. Something else that wasn't odd was changing in front of each other. Being best friends from diapers made you extremely comfortable around him, maybe a little too comfortable.
"I smell bacon," you sighed, dreamily. Grizz had Guard duty last night and when it was just you home, you didn't normally make dinner, so your stomach was begging for food.
"Has to be Luke. You and I both know Jason and Clark have no idea how to even turn the stove on," Grizz said, and you laughed although it was true.
Walking downstairs, you were pleased to see Luke had already laid plates out for you and Grizz. You ruffled Jason's hair on the way past and he grumbled a 'good morning' through his mouth-full of food.
"Are you going to let me cut that today?" He shrugged, and Clark waved his fork at his own head.
"You can have at mine. Shave it all if you want," he said with a shrug, continuing to shovel food into his mouth. You nodded eagerly at his request; all the boys looked homeless and you had been begging them for weeks to let you cut their hair, but they didn't want you to because you weren't a "professional."
"Can I braid yours today Grizzly bear?" He nodded and you bounced excitedly. Grizz had always worn his hair on the longer side, but it was long enough now that you could actually braid it on top and pull it into a little bun like he usually wore it. Although he said he hated it, you knew he secretly loved it.
"I only let you because then you give me a head massage," he said. Luke, Jason, and Clark all exchanged glances and smirks because they knew the real reason Grizz let you get away with practically anything.
After you both had finished eating, you sat on the couch and Grizz settled himself on the ground between your legs, relaxing back into you as you began twisting strands of hair.
When you had finished, you lightly patted his shoulder to let him know to get up, and he gave you a relaxed smile. "Thanks (Y/N), I'll see you later," he said, grabbing his stuff and heading out the door for his shift of cleaning at the cafeteria.
You looked over to see the three boys all smiling and shaking their heads at you. "Um, hi? Do all of you have a staring problem?"
Luke laughed and crossed the room to shake your shoulders. "Can you not see that that boy is completely in love with you?" You looked shocked at his statement, but he kept talking. "He let's you braid his hair. I wouldn't even let Helena do that to me!"
"We're just best friends," you said defensively, but you both could hear the hesitation in your voice. At some point your relationship had shifted, and it felt like you were in this strange limbo. You didn't want to tell him how you felt because what if he didn't feel the same way?
"Yeah right. Best friends don't cuddle like that, and they don't change in front of each other, and they don't share clothes 24/7!" Clark pulled at the football sweatshirt you were wearing and you blushed.
"I promise you Grizz feels the same way about you," Jason said, but you ducked your head in embarrassment.
They left you alone the rest of the afternoon to think over what they said, and when you heard the front door open, for the first time in your life, you dreaded seeing Grizz. When the door to the room finally opened, you kept your gaze down at the book in your lap.
He cleared his throat and you heard him let out a breath before the words came tumbling out. "This is either going to be really awkward or really amazing but I just wanted you to know that I love you, like more than a friend and I have for a really, really long time now. Like, maybe since I met you and I hope you feel the same way about me because I really don't want to ruin what we have," he said, wincing as soon as the words left his mouth. The boys must've talked to him about what happened earlier.
You bit your lip and glanced up to meet his gaze. "I think I'm in love with you too," you whispered, and his face broke into a grin. He dove onto the bed, practically laying on top of you, his head buried in your neck. "We've been dating for awhile, haven't we?"
"I think so," he chuckled.
"Well, I'm glad we finally got our labels figured out!" He smiled up at you and nodded.
"Me too."
