You rubbed your eyes, grabbing the biggest coffee cup out of the cupboard and trying to remember how to turn the coffee maker on. Your brain in the morning never functioned correctly, and it was a miracle you even made it down the stairs without injury.

Even after the first sip, your head felt clearer, and you opened the curtains above the kitchen sink to let the early morning sunlight in. Movement caught your eye and when you glanced towards your mother's flower garden, a figure was running back out to the road.

You opened the sliding glass door that led to the back porch and squinted against the sun, but all you could make out was a football jersey in the Westham school colors. Surveying the garden with a pout, you could tell that black-eyed Susan's had been ripped from the ground.

                                   ————————

"Who do you think it was?" Allie popped a carrot stick into her mouth and glanced at the table where all of the football players sat at lunch.

You shrugged and followed her gaze. "Not sure. He definitely had a double digit number on his jersey though and he was pretty tall."

Allie laughed and rolled her eyes. "That's pretty much the whole team, genius." You kicked her under the table, and she laughed again before pointing over at them. "Look at Luke's pants."

You squinted at the brown knees of his otherwise light blue jeans and widened your eyes at Allie. "Oh my gosh, you're so smart! It has to be him, why else would he have dirt there?"

"Should we confront him now or later?"

You hesitated a moment before shaking your head. "Actually, I have a better idea."

That night you made sure to go to bed super early so you could be awake if Luke dropped by again. When you woke up, you kept the lights off in the house opening the kitchen curtains and planting yourself in front of the window.

Just as the sun was beginning to rise you saw a shadow cross into the backyard and drop a backpack on the ground before kneeling and beginning to pluck marigolds from the outskirts of your yard.

You flipped the porch light on and watched Luke's head snap up, guilt apparent as he quickly shoved the flowers behind his back. "Morning (Y/N)! Just enjoying the sunrise," he said, bouncing nervously on his heels.

"From my backyard?" You raised your eyebrows and crossed to where he was standing, interested how he would answer.

"Yeah! You have a great view back here," he said, turning over his shoulder and glancing behind him. You took the opportunity to grab the flowers from behind his back and wave them with an expectant look. "Oh yeah, I can explain that."

"Yeah you better! My mom works really hard on this garden, and I was blaming the rabbits for all the empty patches, but it was you all along!"

Luke rubbed the back of his head, his eyes to the ground. "I'm sorry about that."

"Who are these even for? Helena?" He shook his head sadly, and you gave him a confused look.

"Things have been a little rough with us lately," he said in a small voice.

"Oh gosh, I'm sorry," you whispered, but he shook his head, smiling.

"You couldn't have known."

"So then who are these for?"

He smiled and told you to grab whatever you needed for school before you both began a long walk. You didn't mind though, the weather was cool and the sun was shining so you enjoyed the peaceful morning.

Luke stopped you in front of a cemetery and you frowned at the sign. "What are we doing here?"

"Giving her the flowers," he said in a chipper tone, taking the flowers from your hand and heading into the gate. You followed him hesitantly as he led you to a headstone, and you remembered all at once.

Luke's mom had died a couple years prior, and even though you were never really close with him, you knew how much she meant to him. "Oh Luke," you mumbled, glancing to see a smile on his face.

"I bring her flowers a couple times a week but they were getting a little pricey and my dad doesn't know I do this. I guess I'm a little embarrassed to tell him and the flowers in your yard are always so pretty," he said, trailing off. "I'm really sorry. I should have asked first."

"Oh my gosh, no it's okay! At least it wasn't for some dumb girl," you said, bumping his shoulder with yours. He smiled and replaced the dying ones with the bright yellow ones.

"I suppose I should just start buying them," he said as you left and started the walk to school.

You linked your arm with his and shook your head. "Take as many as you want, Luke. I'll just let my mom believe they are the rabbits after all!"
