You would think that starting a new school would be easy by now considering that you've done it countless times in the past, but that is just not the case. The butterflies that had been dormant in your stomach now came out in full force as you walked down the hallway lined with lockers. Everyone standing in their friend groups, talking and laughing, made you feel even more nervous because you convinced yourself they were laughing at you.
You pushed the though away and glanced down at the slip of paper in your hand with your locker number. Just as you are about to glance back up, you felt yourself collide with something hard. Your books went tumbling to the ground, the stack of welcome papers scattered across the hallway and the person you had run into was huffing angrily.
"You should probably watch where you're going," he mumbled. You kept your head dipped because you didn't want anyone to see the tears of embarrassment that were forming in your eyes. You just nodded and continued to pick up the papers, the stranger bending down with a sigh to help. "I'm Campbell, by the way. You look new."
"That obvious?" You stole a quick glance up to see that he was looking at you with a smirk, and you tried to dry your eyes without being too obvious so you could look at him as well. His brown hair was on the shorter side but you could tell it would be curly if he wore it longer, and his blue eyes seemed to be staring holes into your soul.
"I mean, I've gone to school with the same kids my whole life so new faces catch me off guard," he said and you nodded lightly. He opened his mouth so say something more but a voice behind you cut him off.
"Campbell, leave the poor girl alone. Don't scare her off on her first day." Campbell rolled his eyes and shoved the papers he had been holding into your hands before stalking away. The boy behind you knelt down and picked up the rest of your papers, and you were instantly in love with his floppy hair and lopsided grin. "Don't listen to whatever Campbell says, he's literally the meanest person I've ever met. I'm Grizz, by the way. And you are?"
You wiped the dumb smile from your face and accepted the remaining papers he was handing you. "I'm (Y/N). I just transferred here," you said, and he reached out to pull you up from the ground.
"Well, you are in luck because you have the best tour guide!" You giggled at him and followed him like a lost puppy as he showed you the ins and outs of Westham High School. When you reached the front of the school, he led you outside and swept his hand over to a group of people. "And these are my best friends in the whole wide world, Luke, Jason, and Clark!"
"Finally Westham has a piece of eye candy. We really needed it," Jason said with a wink and a blush crept into your cheeks. Grizz slung his arm around your shoulders and turned you away from him.
"She's already been terrorized by Campbell today. Maybe hold off in the aggressive flirting for today," Grizz said, and the other boys rolled their eyes at the mere mention of the name.
You frowned and decided to be brave and speak up. "Why does no one like him? He seemed nice to me."
"Oh no, he is not going to corrupt this sweet little girl. No way," Clark said, and you smiled at his comment.
"He's just not a good dude," Luke explained. "He's just always been a little different, and scary."
Grizz opened his mouth to say something more but his face lit up as a boy walked towards the group. He waved and stood up, kissing the boy on the cheek and turning back to you. "This is my lovely boyfriend Sam. Campbell's brother. He's deaf," Grizz explained. You smiled and nodded, glad to have learned a bit sign language at one of your old schools. "(Y/N) here has already had the pleasure of meeting your brother."
Sam winced at the mention of Campbell's name and began to tell you stories of Campbell that were enough to make your stomach twist. Still, you felt a little bad for the guy. No one seemed to like him all that much and the few times you had seen him around the school so far today he was alone.
At lunch, Grizz had motioned you over to where he was sitting with a lot of the same people you met this morning and a few new faces. "Welcome to the cool table," he said with a wink, and you laughed lightly. Campbell sitting alone near the cafeteria door caught your attention, and you couldn't help but let your smile fall when you saw how lonely he looked. "Are you going to sit?"
You looked back at Grizz and shook your head. "Actually, I think I already have a seat today, but I'll see you later!"
Grizz watched you walk towards Campbell and turned back to the table, shaking his head. "That girl is a literal angel." You smiled at the comment that he probably didn't mean for you to hear.
You slid into the chair across from Campbell and he looked up, wiping the sad expression from his features and replaced it with a look of annoyance. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be off with your popular friends?"
You opened your bag and pulled out your peanut butter sandwich, shaking your head. "I spent all day with them, I figured that you would want someone to talk to." You glanced around but couldn't find any sign of food. "Where's your lunch?"
"Not hungry," he replied, dropping his gaze again. Any other time you would give up and not continue to bother someone that obviously didn't want to talk, but Campbell was different. Hearing the stories about him today made you cautious, but you didn't want to give up on him.
"Yeah right. Here," you said, handing him half of the sandwich and pulling out a bag of pretzels as well. He just stared at the sandwich hesitantly and you pushed your hand further towards him. "My hand is getting tired."
He took it with a curious stare and you happily bit into your half. "Why are you doing this?"
"Doing what?"
"Treating me like a person," he whispered, and your heart broke at his words. "I know what people have been saying about me and I'm not going to tell you that all that stuff isn't true. So why are you sitting with me and giving me food and being nice to me?"
"Campbell, you haven't done anything mean to me. Maybe you are horrible and scary but I'd rather have the chance to get to know you first and make my own decisions instead of avoiding you and listening to what everyone else is saying."
He gave a small smile. "I still don't know your name."
"Duh! If we're going to be best friends, names would be a great place to start. I'm (Y/N)."
"Best friends?"
"Maybe. Who knows," you replied with a smile.
