Chapter 31: The Moon's Choice

"Jack?" he hears a voice. "Jack!"

It was familiar. He opens his eyes with half-asleep eyes. "T-Tooth?" he says.

"You're okay," the hummingbird-like fairy sighs in relief.

"Where am I?" he asked.

"We're out of Pitch's lair. We went in when you took too long to send us a signal. We saw you lying next to a globe where three large, flashing lights flickered out," Tooth explained

"What does it mean when a light flickers out?" he asks.

"That child no longer believes in the owner of the globe," said North.

"So... Rapunzel & the others are okay?" Jack asked, standing up.

"Actually..." North turns sideways to make way for the three familiar children behind him.

They all look at him as well in smiles.

"Guys!!" Jack exclaims & runs to them for a group hug.

"Are you okay? Anybody hurt??" he asked.

"Yeah! We heard ya message, Frost. We made sure we were fine," said Merida.

"What happened to us, though?" asked Rapunzel.

"Pitch said that he put you to sleep. He made your nightmares feel real," said Jack.

"Wow... so Toothless didn't try to kill me?" asked Hiccup.

"And my mum didn't become a bear & my dad didn't go to kill her?" asked Merida.

"And I'm not the lost princess & my mother isn't really my mother?" asked Rapunzel.

"Well... Merida & Hiccup's aren't," Jack says, "Yours is," Jack points at Rapunzel.

"I'm... the lost princess? For real?" said Rapunzel in disbelief.

"Alright, alright! Enough chit-chatting, you kids. Time to save the world from Pitch," said Bunny.

"Us? To stop Pitch Black?" the four of them said in shock. They never signed up for this.

"While Jack was in lair fighting Pitch, Man in Moon talked to us. He said that you are the chosen ones to defeat Pitch in this time," said North.

"Here we go again with the choosing," Jack looks up at the moon, "What is it with you & choosing people to do your job!?" he yells.

"Jack, calm down," said Tooth.

Jack sighs. "It's enough that he chose me for a Guardian which I had no idea how to do & now he wants me to defeat Pitch?" Jack says.

"Jack, maybe he has a reason why," said Rapunzel.

"Yes, he does," North responds to Rapunzel's statement, "I asked him why as well & he said that:"

'You are chosen by your special abilities & caring hearts.'

The four exchange looks. Special abilities? Let's see here... Jack has his powers of winter, Rapunzel has her magical hair, Merida has her ability to accurately shoot arrows & Hiccup has his control over dragons. Those truly are special. And they do have caring hearts. They can't be friends if they didn't care for each other.

"But why us?" said Hiccup, "Why not other people who are better than us? I'll have to be very honest; I'm at the bottom of my tribe, Rapunzel lived locked up in a tower for 15 years, Merida is forced to marry someone she doesn't love & Jack... I'm not gonna say anything anymore," he said.

"But you are better than them. You just... well, don't see it yet," said North.

"Huh? How are we better?" Merida crosses her arms.

"Well... Hiccup is future chief, Rapunzel is princess, Merida changed her fate & Jack is Guardian," said North.

They exchange looks again. North does have a point. They are everythig he said, weren't they? They're not just normal kids who are invisible to the world. They were something no one thought them to be. They became something more.

"We get it, North," said Merida. The three look at her.

"The Man in the Moon chose us for the right reasons. We remain faithful that things will go well. We're not looking for miracles, at least not for today. But in my heart I know... we've got what it takes," she said, everyone smiling at her, "Our stories are not yet legend, probably never will be, but in them... bonds were struck," she adds.

"Merida's right. We've got what it takes to defeat Pitch!" cheered Jack & so did everyone else.

"Defeat me?" a voice said from the shadows. The moon was suddenly being covered by dark clouds.

Merida readies her bow, Jack readies his staff, Rapunzel grips on her hair & Hiccup prepares to fly on Toothless. The Guardians prepare themselves as well; North with his swords, Bunny with his boomerangs & Tooth with her wings.

Suddenly, a Night Mare came rushing towards them. Tooth flies to it swiftly & slices it with her wings.

"I can handle petty children on my own & I don't need Guardians to get in my way!" the voice yells.

Suddenly, a lash of Nightmare Sand hits Tooth, causing her to fall.
