Seven years ago, Klaus, Elijah, Kol and Rebekah Mikaelson all sacrificed themselves in order to take down the hollow; separating Inadu's spirit between the four of them to save Hope and Kaiden. They were forced to split from each other, sacrificing their vow of 'Always and Forever' to save the lives of the Mikaelson twins. It had been seven years since Thea Mikaelson last saw her husband properly.

The two soulmates tried all they could in the beginning to see each other - finding spare moments when the twins were at school to travel the world together. But that soon stopped. With the pain caused by the separating of his family, Klaus quickly began to descend into vicious madness. The fact that he couldn't raise his children in the home he had made with his wife chipped at his soul until there was barely anything left.

Over the years, Klaus had slowly begun to remove himself from both the twins and Thea's lives. He stopped sending birthday cards and presents and letters. He made excuses not to see Thea, even though he so desperately wanted her close. In truth, the original hybrid couldn't handle her seeing just how broken he truly was. He didn't want her to see him at his worst- especially not whilst he was on the edge of insanity.

Klaus Mikaelson was alone. For the first time in his long existence, he had nobody. His siblings had fled to different parts of the world, all unable to be in the same place in order to keep the Hollow at bay. He wasn't allowed near his children in case the Hollow managed to cling itself back to them. And with it all, he had lost his wife. Forced to live away from her for years without knowing whether he'd ever be able to see her again properly.

But it wasn't just Klaus that was suffering. Thea Mikaelson had become a shell of the person she once was. With the pain caused by Klaus' absence and the added pressure of being a faction leader and a single mother to two very powerful, supernatural teenagers who thought their father hated them...her life was more of a struggle now than it had ever been.

Hope and Kaiden were now fifteen and both very aware of everything around them - including the words spoken about their family. As the years crawled by, the twins had begun to view Klaus as a deadbeat father; the psychotic villain that everyone else viewed him as. After the event that had happened when they were 10, they had received no communication from their father and so they'd both slowly turned away from him.

They saw just how bad their father's absence effected their mother. They were there to hear her cry herself to sleep most nights when she thought they were both asleep. They were there to see the dullness of her expression, the way her eyes had lost their glimmer and her smile had become broken. They were there to help restore parts of their mother's heart when their father was nowhere in sight.
