Griffin

3:16am

Everything tonight went by so fast it felt like a dream. Dream isn't the right word, nightmare fits it more. From the second Mae woke me up, I realized something was wrong, but we could've been okay. But Mae. She didn't think she should be saved, something about her family. I put my head in my hands as I sit in the waiting room. I came in the ambulance with Mae. When she wouldn't leave, she inhaled too much smoke, and some burns from the fire she touched. Why? So many questions run through my head, but that's the main one. Why would she want to die? I get that she doesn't want to put me in danger, but it's been a week that we've lived together, and I'm still here. We both are still here. I can protect her, why would she want to leave me and die?

"Griffin!" I turn around and quickly wipe the tears off my face as Cassie runs towards me, engulfing me in a hug. "Oh my god, are you okay?" I nod.

"I have a first degree burn on my ankle, and a little shaken up, but other than that I'm fine," I start, "but Mae was really bad." I fight the hyperventilation, "she has to make it Cas, she has to!" Cassie hugs me, and doesn't say a thing. When she finally pulls away, Mack replaces her,

"She will be," Mack whispers to me. As tears slip my eyes she puts one hand on each of my shoulders. "Griffin, look at me. Mae will be okay. You are both going to be okay. You saved her. You will both be okay." I nod, and attempt to mutter a thanks.

"Your parents are on their way," Cassie says once we are sitting down.

"Well isn't that great," I whisper. The last thing I need right now is my parents. My god damn parents lecturing me on how being with her almost killed me. Because I'm aware of that fact, but I'm also aware that if I wasn't there Mae would be dead by now.

"Family of Maeve Colton?" I stand up and the doctor walks towards me. Cassie gives me a questioning glance at the last name put down, but I can't give her real last name, and I was thinking on the spot.

"Doctor," I say acknowledging him, "how is she?"

"She will be okay," he starts, "she is suffering from respiratory distress so we have her hooked up to an oxygen mask, and we will need to keep her on the oxygen mask for a few days at least. In terms of burns, she has many simple first degree burns across her body that will heal in a couple days to a week. Sadly she does have a severe second degree burn on her left calf. That will take some treatment as well as about 2-3 weeks to heal." Mack squeezes my hand as he tells me this. I nod,

"Okay, okay," I bite my lip, "so when can I see her?"

They said she needs to rest for a couple more hours until 7. So I sit here with Mack and Cassie, until my parents get here.

"Griffin sweetie!" my mom exclaims, "are you okay?" She hugs me tight, but I don't have the words to say I'm okay. I nod, and she immediately looks more relieved. "How's Mae?" I'm thankful she at least thought to ask.

"Not doing too well," I mutter, "they are keeping her on oxygen for a few days for respiratory distress, and she has a bad burn on her leg." My mom hugs me again, and I'm thankful she's at least pretending to care. When I'm sitting down, with my mom next to me, I notice Cassie and Mack slowly slipping out.

"We are going to get everyone some coffee," Mack says, leading Cassie away. Now it's just me and my parents. My father paces back and forth in front of me. I know what's coming, and there is no point in hiding that.

"Say it Dad," I sigh, as I watch my Dad burst with anger that he was... well not exactly holding in, but taming it.

"You could've died Griffin!" he exclaims, "you could've burned to death, all because of her, and her family." He says this part quieter, "you need to leave her Griffin! Come home with us, and leave her behind! I promise I won't put her in jail unless she's caught." I shake my head.
