My heart beats uncontrollably as I kneel on one knee with the ring exposed in front of me. As Mae turns towards me and her mouth gapes, tears coming from her eyes, I knew everything I had leading up to this was the perfect move.
"Maeve Clara Blake. There are only 3 things, I can say I'm certain of. I'm certain that I love you, more than anything in the world, and always will. I'm certain, you are the perfect girl for me. And I'm certain that I don't want to spend any more time without being married to you. Mae, will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?" I tell her all of this, trying not to choke up myself. I catch Mack and Lucas sitting at a table inside waiting for her answer almost as impatiently as I do. She stares at the ring and back at my eyes.
"Yes!" she exclaims. I stand up and kiss her with so much passion I swear it's too much for this world. Mack and Lucas lead the restaurant in applause, and as Mae and I head to the limo, I can't help my smile as I hold her hand with the ring. I'm engaged. That night is quite an eventful one and there is little to no sleep. The next day, the group surprises us with a huge breakfast buffet in our kitchen and it's kind of nice to have breakfast waiting for us, especially with the appetite we worked up. "Awwww, thank you!" Mae says to each person of our group before digging into the food.
"So when's the wedding?" Mack asks excitedly. Mae and I both laugh and exchange a look. We talked about it, but we want to take our time to plan it.
"Maybe in the summer, or early fall," Mae answers. That's what we were deciding between. "It takes a while to plan, but we'll look into venues here and see when they are available." I nod, just backing her up.
"We'll let you know as soon as we do," I add as everyone seems anxious to know. I guess amongst everything we do, and how dark it can get, it's good to have a fun event like this to look forward to. After breakfast my phone starts ringing. "It's my Dad," Iwhisper to Mae before going to the bedroom to talk to him. "Hey Dad."
"Son!" he exclaims, "I hear congratulations are in order!" I pretend not to be surprised he knows, though truly I am curious how he found out.
"Yeah it's amazing!" I exclaim, "how did you find out..." He pauses for a minute. I wonder if he's thinking of an excuse.
"What do you mean?" He asks. "They called me before they called you..." I stutter on my next words, confused,
"Who called you?" I ask him. Are we mixing up our celebrations?
"The lawyer, who else?" he says, "he said he was calling you right after he hung up with me..." just then my phone lights up with a call from an unknown number,
"One sec Dad, I'm going to put you on hold, this is him now," I put Dad on hold and pick up the phone, "Griffin Colton."
"Griffin, it's John Taylor," he starts, "I have some great news! Due to the severity and urgency of the case, the court is going to push the Blake case to the front of the line. Trials will start in about 3 months, and it should be a quick and easy, couple day case!" I bite my lip, thoughts of Mae filling my head."Oh yeah, that's great," I say with a fake enthusiasm. "Let me know details when you have them..." I hang up with him and go back to my Dad.
"Exciting, right!" he exclaims. "What did you think I was talking about, if it wasn't that?" Now is not exactly the best time to tell him that I'm engaged to Mae, but he may as well know sooner rather than later.
"Ummm Dad," I start keeping my voice calm and collected, "I proposed to Mae last night. We are getting married." I hold my breath waiting for some kind of lash out.
