As we reveal that our baby, our perfect little child is a boy, I couldn't be happier. As Mae and I eat the cake everything feels perfect. And then suddenly it doesn't. The mood in the room changes so quickly it doesn't feel real. Mae notices it too. The strong sense of fear that fills the room.
"Griff," she says hesitantly, "I think something is wrong." Everything after that seems to move in slow motion, yet it moves so fast. Mae and Indie exchange words, Mae acts so brave it scares me. As Indie loads her gun, it scares me more. She points it in Mae's direction, then she's yelling at me to move.
"Now Griffin kindly move to the side," Indie tells me. I stand my ground and block out Mae's pleads for me to use. I'd take a bullet for her Cas, I really would. My breath quickens as I stand there. Indie is counting down now and Mae is screaming at me to move. I hold my ground because if I move, Mae is left wide open, and I can't risk that. So I hold my ground and close my eyes as she pulls the trigger, I wait to be hit with the pain, and when I open my eyes, I'm still okay. But Mae isn't.
Her screams pierce my ears and the guilt hits me like a blow to the stomach. I immediately go to her side holding the wound, applying pressure. My tears stain her wedding dress, though I guess the blood has already ruined it. Indie is smiling and it just... it makes me want to kill her. After the first shot was fired, everyone sprung into action. We're in a room full of detectives and police so it isn't surprising that some of them have guns. Another shot is fired, but I'm not sure from which side because I'm busy holding down Mae's wound and whispering assurances to her.
"Hey," I say squeezing her hand, "everything is going to be okay, so you don't worry about it. The ambulance will be here any minute, we'll get you all bandaged up, and they'll go to jail. Everything will be okay?" Mae nods, but I can see her consciousness slowly fading as we sit here. "Hold on Mae," I tell her, "they'll be here any second The paramedics are on their way." I have no idea whether or not that's true. Someone must have called them by now.
"How is she?" Cassie says running over. I bite my lip. I can't answer because I don't want to admit she isn't doing well. To myself or to Cassie. "The paramedics will be here in a few minutes, hold on Mae!" she exclaims.
"Did they catch them?" I ask her through the tears. "Her siblings. Did the police get them?" Cassie nods,
"Yeah I'm not really sure. One of them was shot, and the other two were being held down. I think the police showed up to take them to the station," she tells me. I have much bigger problems, yet one question comes to my mind. Because I know it's going to come down to me telling Mae when she wakes up.
"Which sibling was shot?" I ask her hesitantly. I wish I didn't hear the answer, but I forget about it for now because the ambulance shows up.
"You're the husband?" they ask me as they bandage her up and put her onto a stretch board. I nod,
"She'll be okay right?" I ask the paramedic, as he loads Mae into the ambulance, "it's our wedding day, and," it dawns on me, and more fear fills me, "and she's pregnant." The guy freezes and writes something down.
"Mr. Colton, please get in the ambulance," he tells me, "the doctors will tell you everything once we get to the hospital. Now another thought fills my head. I don't just have Mae's life to worry about, I have our baby. Mae and our baby were shot. The ride to the ambulance feels like an eternity as I watch them pack her with bandages and gauze and push meds. Everything seems like such a blur. It's our wedding day. Everything was perfect. We are having a baby boy. Everything was supposed to be perfect.
