When I wake up, I'm highly aware of the fact this is the latest I've slept in a while. Then I remember what day it is. My birthday. More specifically my 30th birthday. The big 30! The question is why am I still in bed at almost 10am in the morning. Where is everyone? So I get out of bed and walk down the stairs into the kitchen. The lights are off so I know what's coming.
"SURPRISE!" 10 voices yell as the lights turn on and balloons are thrown everywhere. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" I smile, and my gaze goes to a guilty looking Griffin, whom I told nothing big this year.
"Happy Birthday Mae," Griffin says grabbing my waist and kissing me, "Hope you don't mind I invited a couple people over." I smile at everyone and we sit down at the long dining room table I had to get installed to fit everyone.
"Happy Birthday Mommy!" Charlotte says handing me a card, her blue eyes peering up at me. I read the little card that was clearly made by a 5 year old.
"Thank you Char," I say hugging her. As I open the presents there is a lot of shouting. It's not even just my kids, Mack and Lucas are here too with their twins, Aria and Lacey. They are Charlotte's age, and it's nice for the girls to play together all the time.
"Open that one!" Morgan exclaims. I open the big card that says from Griffin, Sunny, Ben, Morgan, Cameren, and Charlotte. All 6 members of my perfect little family. They all wrote little messages, and put their handprint in it.
"Sunny, Ben! I can't believe you guys came home for this semester just started!" I exclaim. Sunny is in her 3rd year at John Hopkins pre-med, and it's quite a long drive to get down here, whereas Ben is at University of Florida, taking all the prereqs for law school.
"Course we came home!" Sunny exclaims, she's 20 now, and has a couple inches on me, "it's your big 3 0." I smile at her and hug them both. Then go to hug my other 3 perfect angels.
"Mommy when am I going to be 30?" Cam asks. I smile, he's only 7, so it's better to answer veigly than give an exact number of years.
"A very long time Cam," I tell him, "although it'll feel like it passes quickly." As I sit back and eat as many junk filled waffles as I can, I can't help thinking about how little time it's felt like, since I was 18, leaving the family business for Griffin. For our future together. Now we have that future, and the house is always busy, whether we are heading out for stakeouts or taking care of the little rugrats running around. Morgan is 10, about the age we adopted Sunny, yet it feels like yesterday we signed the adoption papers, and I told Griffin I was pregnant with Morgan. And now 10 years later, I somehow have 2 more perfect mini versions of Griffin and I, that I love with my whole heart. While I may have been born into a troubling situation, I found a way out, and now I've turned my life around. So if I can go from being a trained assassin to a mother of 5, married to the perfect man after everything I've been through... Well let's just say anyone can do anything if they want it bad enough.
