I'm really happy to be leaving the hospital. It's not that I want to leave Mae or anything, but that place is so suffocating. I have a slightly busy night tonight and I don't think it'll be later than 9pm, but I promised Mae I'll text if it is. First stop, Mack and I are heading over to the house to get what we can. The fire was bad and a lot of things were burnt to a crisp, but a few rooms were spared thanks to the fire department. When we pull up in front of the house I shiver. Almost the whole house looks burnt to a crisp, and if it wasn't for insurance we would owe a crap ton of money. As we start going through the house, or what's left of it I guess I notice one thing off in the corner of our bedroom. The little stuffed bear, while a bit burnt is still standing. I grab the bear and immediately the recording starts playing. Hey Mae, I just want to say I love you. I always have and always will. You are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen! Goodbye, I love you. I smile at the memory that seems so distant despite the fact it's only been a few weeks. I grab the bear and throw it in the duffle. Might as well add something else to make her smile. After gathering clothing and a few other things that survived not too burnt I head with Mack to the better part of the night. I grab my car and follow Mack's car over to the new condo building right on the beach, a 10 minute drive from Mack's place. We park and buzz into the lobby.
"Name?" the person at the desk asks through the intercom.
"Griffin Colton," I say, "I'm here to look at the available apartment." It takes a moment but the door unlocks and Mack and I walk in.
"Someone will be down to show you the room in a minute, you and your wife can wait down here," he says motioning to the couches in front of the fireplace and fish tank. Mack and I sit down on the couches both awkwardly ignoring the fact he called her my wife. Although to be fair I put down Mr. and Mrs. Colton on the rental application. We sit there for a good 10 minutes until a woman in her early 30s walks in. She's dressed in a suit and I have to say it's kind of intimidating.
"Allison Morton, nice to meet you," she says, shaking our hands.
"Griffin Colton, and this is my friend Mack Johnson," I say as we both shake her hand, "I'm surprising my girlfriend with this apartment so she doesn't know yet." Allison smiles.
"That's so sweet of you, she'll love the place." With this she walks towards the elevator. "The condo building has 12 rooms all of which are taken with the exception of the one you are looking at. We have many young university students living here so you'll fit right in." As Mack and I step into the elevator she continues discussing some of the features of the apartment building. "There is a fitness center open all hours of the day, the place is right on the beach and we have cabana's for each room right on the water. There is a bar down here with small snacks such as nachos and burgers that you can always come down and get. Each room has a balcony that looks right on the water. We have a basketball court that is converted to a tennis court at some times, there are often games going on, and a spa downstairs that you do have to pay for."
"This place is literally a hotel!" Mack exclaims as we walk out of the elevator.
"Originally it was made as a hotel but so many university students wanted to move into it as it is only 2 blocks from the university, and they make quite a lot of money off of renting it out to those students for 3-4 years straight," she answers. She stops in front of a room on the 3rd floor which is where half the rooms are. "This is your room, it is opened with an electronic pass, but when you are inside the room there are additional locks you can put on the door." She opens the door and I have to say I'm amazed already. The pictures can't compare to how perfect this room always seems from the entrance way.
