Dealing with the aftermath

A week later, I walk down to the lake desperate to escape the suffocation palace walls. The moonlight comes out from behind the clouds and flood the lake and clearing with light. I spot Valarie siting on a rock overlooking the water. I walk up beside her and sigh.

'Valarie what are you doing out here at this time?'

'I can't sleep.'

'It's freezing out here.'

'Yeah, but the home was suffocating me,' she says while looking out on the lake. 'What are you doing out here?'

'Palace walls are suffocating.'

'And people move around probably.'

'Yeah.' I try to smother the yawn but she sees it anyway. She changes into a wolf and lies down. I smile a little and lie down cuddling up to the warm wolf. She wraps her tail around me and I fall asleep.

Something keeps kicking and murmuring. I sit up and find Valarie in human form on the ground behind me. She tosses and turns on the ground. Her head shiny with perspiration. She pants while she talks. I reach out cautiously and gently touch her shoulder. Suddenly something wraps around my neck and I'm thrust backwards off balance. I gasp as I try to get air but I'm not getting anything.

'Valarie!' I croak out. 'It's me Raven!' I call as I realize its Val's arm around my neck chocking me.

She looks down and drops me in shock. I lie on the ground groaning for a moment as I get my breath back.

Rain falls from the sky and I yell out, 'STOP!'

Val only looks at me. 'I am so sorry Weaver,' she shakes her head and runs away.

Weaver? Who the fuck? I groan, get up and quickly teleport to where I hear her tripping over. I quickly cast a spell to make her unconscious and drop to the floor at her side still struggling for air.

Raven where are you?

In the forest near the lake.

Why...

Can you get Alec to come here to get his wife? I'll meet you both by the lake. Gritting my teeth, I stand up and pick Valarie up carefully. She is not as light as I am expecting. Too much muscle. I carry her bridal style back through the forest and back near the lake. I lie her down on the ground careful to make sure that she isn't lying on any rocks and I sit down leaning against a boulder while I wait.

Minutes later a wolf comes running towards me. I watch it silently not moving. It slows down and then changes into Alec.

'Where is she?'

I point at where Valarie lies near me. He runs over to her and kneels, checking her pulse.

'Why is she unconscious?' Loki's voice asks me. I look over to the shadows and Loki walks out.

'Spell,' my clone replies. Alec and Loki before look at the clone then at me. A knife appears in my father's hand but I quickly dismiss the clone before he can kill it.

Don't do that.

'What's the go with the clone? Why aren't you talking?' Alec shoots questions at me as he picks up his wife.

I point at my neck then at the unconscious woman in his arms.

'She wouldn't.'

Rolling my eyes, I stand up. Loki appears in front of me and he wraps an arm around my shoulders.

'Bed-time missy,' he tells me as he teleports me into my bedroom. I stumble over to my bed, drop onto it sideways and pass out.

Heat rises but I pass it off as a temperature rising from the sore neck. The bed sinks and I wake up. I sit up and look at her wearily.

'I won't kill you this time,' she forces a smile. She moves her hand up to my neck. I flinch at her touch. 'I am so sorry,' she says as she starts to heal me.

'You need help. It's fine.'

'I think I need to stay in the castle for a bit,' she says. I look at her oddly but make a cup of coffee appear in my hands and pass it to her. 'What if the kids walk in when I am sleeping and hug me? I could seriously hurt them,' she continues.

'Talk to me about it, Val?'

'There's so much to talk about, so much memories that caused pain.'

'Tell me one that stands out the most.'

'Evans. He became my best friend on this fight. He was funny. Hilarious really. We were under fire and we had bullets firing from everywhere. I saw the shooters, so I told Evans and we went up to take them out. Just as I was about to shoot them, they pressed a button. I wasn't affected, but Evans. He was hurt really bad. I couldn't heal him. No one could, not even me. I felt like a failure, I should never have let him follow me. I should never have got him killed.' She sobs with tears running down her face. She shows me the dog tag.

'Val, I don't know what to say. You didn't get him killed. I'm sure you didn't,' I sink back into the cushions seeing as I wasn't going to be going anywhere today. But my new trainer has a different idea.
