Chapter 1. Prologue

Third person's P.O.V

Zachariel Joseph fell in love for the first time when he was fourteen years old. The boy who he fell in love with belonged to a conservative family. Zachariel pursued the object of his affection for a year before the other boy agreed to date him. Zachariel never had a happy life. He grew up in an institution. Zachariel was, abandoned as a baby on the doorstep of an orphanage. Zachariel was over the moon when he got what he wanted for the first time in life.

He swore to keep his lover happy at all costs, especially when his lover decided to ditch his wealthy family to build a life with him. Was it foolish of Zachariel to do so? Maybe it was, but it was the first time in his life that someone had loved him back. The boys were just eighteen years old when they left their town. Zachariel sacrificed himself for his lover. He did everything in his power to give his lover the life that he would have had if he hadn't abandoned his family. Zachariel worked twenty-four-seven just so his lover could finish his studies.

Zachariel enjoyed crafting business tactics. He had started working as a gofer when he was eight years old. The police never found out who had abandoned Zachariel, but it was clear that the boy had good genes. Zachariel made some money by working at a restaurant, at a bar, and by designing websites for shops. He set up a small advertising agency together with his lover after finishing his studies. Both men were happy with each other and with what they had achieved. Zachariel and his lover became the C.E.O's of their company.

Zachariel used his smart business tactics to make the agency successful within three years of its launch. The company became well-known throughout the whole country. More and more clients started signing contracts with them. And the company had to branch out to other areas. Zachariel became a famous entrepreneur. He began winning awards each year and was content with his life. Zachariel's heart shattered when the man he had loved for ten years betrayed him.

He thought that he had done everything to make his lover happy, but it seemed like he was mistaken. Zachariel's lover took everything that he loved from him. Andrew Waltz turned Zachariel from a wealthy C.E.O into a pauper overnight. Zachariel was left heartbroken and homeless. He did not have anyone to lean on and was disappointed in himself. Zachariel had thought that he would live out his days with his lover. The picture-perfect life that he had planned to have with his lover got destroyed in a flash. He suffered a nervous breakdown after the betrayal. He could not function anymore and was, hospitalized. His psychiatrist suggested that if Zachariel had such wild success before, wouldn't it be true that he could do the same again? And if that were true, then shouldn't he build his life back up again, after his recovery, to prove his own capability and, of course, to have the last laugh, but will Zachariel be able to do so?

Alexei Marquis's whole life came crumbling down when he lost his grandmother. He had just turned eighteen when it happened. Alexei had never expected to lose her so soon. He was heartbroken when he found out that his grandmother had been sick all along. And that she had gradually relocated some of her businesses from France to America. What was even more surprising to him was that she had asked his estranged father to handle her assets until he was ready to take over her empire.

Alexei Marquis had enjoyed living with his grandmother Anastasia Marquis in Paris. His grandmother never pressured him to do anything. The boy had never expected things to change so soon. His grandmother was a well-known figure in the business world. His grandmother never spoiled him despite being a billionaire. She also didn't involve him in her work. She allowed the boy to lead an ordinary life and to pursue his dream of becoming a surgeon. Alexei's father married an American woman shortly after his mother's death. He had married the woman without his grandmother's consent.

Alexei's grandmother disowned his father when he decided to move to America with his new wife. Alexei's father left him cruelly behind. He was surprised when he found out that his grandmother was still in contact with his father. Alexei felt like he didn't know anything about the woman he had loved dearly. His father's new wife bore him one child. The boy carried his mother's name. Alexei's father never made an effort to build a relationship with him. Alexei never cared about it because he had his loving grandmother by his side, but she was now gone.

Alexei was now obligated to move to America and to work with his father. Alexei ran away from his responsibilities the moment he arrived in America. He couldn't take it anymore when his father started explaining to him what his duties entailed. They were on their way to his father's house to meet his new family. Alexei never wanted to lead an empire or to see his father again, so he escaped. Alexei only remembered that he was not familiar with the streets of L.A. after fleeing. Alexei had also forgotten his phone and his wallet in his bag in frustration.

He didn't know his father's phone number, so he could not contact him. Alexei roamed the streets of Los Angeles like a wanderer until he met a man who showed him the light. It had been five days since he had escaped. He was sure that his father was looking for him, but this was L.A. The streets were too busy. People avoided Alexei because of his dirty and ragged appearance after a while. Alexei appreciated the note and the money that he received from the man. Alexei managed to reach his father with the man's help. The message that he had received from the man that day was the only thing that kept him going throughout the years. It was like his grandmother had sent a guardian angel from heaven to save him. Alexei didn't even know the man's full name or where he lived. He only knew where the man worked. Alexei had also forgotten how the man looked, but he had never stopped looking for him. Will destiny lead the C.E.O to meet the man again, or will something entirely different happen?
