As Saber grew up and started to understand the world more, things became a little complicated. Despite what has been said before, Sombra didn't allow Twilight or Celestia to tutor Saber. He did it himself.

The twelve year old son, and his father spent lots of time together in the study room, practicing writing, spelling, math and other compulsory subjects - even magic.

Despite it sounding like a good thing, it wasn't. Saber was very close to me. He would always come telling me whenever anything bothered him or whether he was upset. Usually his concerns would regard Sombra.

He complained to me how much pressure Sombra put on him. How insensitive he often was, and that he didn't care about what Saber wanted, but instead focused on what he wanted for Saber.

I sat calmly at a balcony that overlooked the castle garden. My mind was filled with thoughts on what I could do to help my husband and son. It was a cloudy and warm day, with delicate wind. Saber was beside me, resting his head against my chest.

I stroked my sons hair gently, looking at him with a concerned expression. I tried to speak to Sombra about going easy on Saber multiple times, but Sombra would always claim he did nothing wrong.

"Saber. You father loves you, and he only wants what's best for you. He is just going around it in the wrong way." I explained softly. I had no idea what to say that to help Saber. He was very clever for his age. The foal sighed and gently shook his head.

"You have told me that already mom." Saber whined as he looked straight at me. His eyes were identical to Sombra's. "But what he is doing is awful. He won't even let me leave the castle and play outside. Whenever I offer a sport to play he says that's useless and will hand me a book instead. I feel like a puppet because of him."

"He doesn't let you leave because he fears for you. He wants you to be sa-"

"Safe, I know." He interrupted. "I am an alicorn though, I can fend for myself. What even is there for us to be afraid of? You and dad always avoided telling me anything about your past, and I can't leave the castle without you or father following me there to ask any pony." He snapped, and then fell silent as he looked at the floor.

"I am sorry, Saber. I do try to talk to Sombra, but he never listens." I apologized, but Saber remained silent. I knew that in order for him to be happy, he had to know the truth
I could not think of any other way to help him. "Saber, let's go for a walk, I will tell you what you need to know, okay?" I offered. I was afraid Saber would start disliking me the same way he disliked being around Sombra. Instead he gently smiled and nodded.

Soon enough Saber and I left the castle to go on a peaceful walk outside. I tried to remain as calm as possible, but I knew that finding out everything about Sombra's and my past, and everything that happened since I first got here, would be a big shock to him. I put my wing over Saber, and carefully chose my words.

"Saber. You know that bad ponies can become good ponies, right?" I asked, trying to find a way to start.

The foal answered quickly, as though it was an easy question. "Yes, you made that very clear to me before. I just don't know why." He responded.

"Your father, he wasn't always the great King he is now." I said, letting that sink in.

"He wasn't...? You mean, my dad was a bad pony?" He asked, clearly having a hard time understanding how this could have been possible. He was now frowning gently as though not expecting this of all things.

"Yeah, your father won't be happy I'm telling you this, he wanted to keep this a secret so that we can protect you. I believe you deserve to know though." I confessed.
