First Day

I woke up the next day excited for my first day at Hogwarts. I quickly put on my uniform and walked down to the Great Hall for breakfast. The twins were already there so I sat down next to them with Katie. Eventually Angelina, Lee, and Alicia came to join us. I saw the famous Harry Potter sit down a few seats away with a bushy haired girl and another redhead. I wonder if the redhead is related to the twins.

Before I could say anything, Prof. McGonagall gave us our time tables which contained our lessons. I was taking Potions, Transfiguration, Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, and Defense against the Dark Arts. I dropped history of magic, astronomy, and ancient runes after my OWLS. I wanted to drop herbology as well, but it was required to be a healer. I decided I would use one of my free periods to ask the healer at Hogwarts if I could start training under her. I would have lots of time, especially since quidditch is cancelled for this year.

I glanced at the twin's time tables. It seems they each only kept 4 classes. I wondered if that was a choice or if they were just stupid. Both seem like viable options.

"Cool, we have Defense first with Mad-eye!" exclaimed Fred. "People say he's crazy. Wonder what this class will be like."

"Mad-eye? Is that the guy with the weird eyeball that was standing awkwardly behind the teacher's table yesterday?" I asked.

"Yup" replied George. "He's an ex-auror. Half the people in Azkaban are there because of him. Bloody brilliant I say."

Before I could reply, hundreds of owls stormed the Great Hall.  My owl, Whoo-dini, dropped a howler in front of me.

"Holy shit Mags you already have a howler! What did you do?" yelled Fred. I scowled at him from across the table and decided it would just be better if I opened it.

MARGARET! TODAY IS YOUR FIRST DAY AT YOUR NEW SCHOOL! I instantly recognized the voice of my best friend, Rue, who attended Ilvermorny with me. I HOPE YOU HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE! TRY NOT TO MISS ME TOO MUCH! I LOVE YOU! With that the letter burned up. Everyone in the Great Hall was looking at me.

I just laughed at my friend. We had been friends even before we met at Ilvermorny. I practically lived with her family every summer.

"Who was that?" Fred asked me.

"My best friend, Rue. We've known each other since we were babies. She loves to do stuff like that and be the center of attention. Each year we'd start off with a pranking war between each other. I guess this is her way of starting it. I just have to think of how to get her back now." I replied. Fred turned to whisper to George, but I shrugged it off. I had a feeling it was about me though.

When it came time for class, I walked out of the great hall following Angelina and Alicia because I have no idea where this classroom is. Suddenly I felt a strong arm wrap around me.

"George and I have a proposition for you Mags" stated Fred, the owner of the arm.

"Indeed we do." Stated George as Fred guided me across the halls. "It sounds like you were quite the troublemaker back at your old school". I smiled at that thought. I wouldn't say troublemaker so much as life of the party.

"It just so happens we also have quite the reputation. How would you like to join us tonight for some fun. Maybe if you pass the test we'll help you prank your friend and become our own little trio. Like the golden trio but better."

"Sounds fun. Who's the golden trio?" I asked Fred.

"Oh you have so much to learn Mags" George replied. "Luckily you seem to have met the right teachers".

They led me to the DADA classroom where I sat down next to George and Katie during our first lesson. We were conversing quietly when Mad-eye Moody slammed open the door and wobbled forward. His magical eye spinning everywhere, making me extremely uncomfortable. It's unnatural for an eye to move that way.

"My name is prof. Moody" he stated as he wrote his name on the chalk board. Oh wow. Wouldn't have known how to spell if it weren't for that. "I heard from your previous teachers where you are. It seems you need some work in the curses department after studying creatures last year. The Ministry doesn't want me to touch on some of these topics, but you all have your NEWTS coming up. You're big boys and girls I think you can handle it." He received some snickers at that. "Now who can name an unforgivable curse." Wow we're just really diving in there aren't we.

I saw Fred and George raise their hands along with some other people. "Mr Fred Weasley."

"The impervious curse sir."

"Your father would've have heard about that one. Gave the ministry quite a bit of grief trying to figure out if they did you-know-whos bidding under the curse or for fun". He reached into a jar and pulled out a spider. I shuddered. They don't scare me, but it doesn't mean I find them at all pleasant. "Imperio" he said, pointing his wand at the unfortunate creature. He started sending it flying all across the classroom, earning laughter and cheers from the crowd. I sat there, a small smile creeping up on my face.

"Oh you think it's funny? What if I made it jump out the window?" the spider flew to the open window, hovering just over the edge. "Or made it drown itself" The spider hovered over a bucket of water. No one found this amusing anymore. "Another"

He called upon a random Ravenclaw at the front of the classroom. "Cruciatus curse sir"

"Right you are." He whispered Crucio at the unassuming spider who started writhing in extreme pain. I shuddered as a million flashbacks hit me, giving thanks that we can't hear the spider scream. When I open my eyes, I saw George giving me a questioning look. I gave him a what about it look back before noticing Moody's eye had stopped moving and was looking straight at me.

"Ms. Hughes" he stated hobbling over to my desk. "Can you name the last curse for me?"

I locked eyes with him. I was always taught not making eye contact is a sign of weakness. My favorite game to play is to see how long I can hold eye contact with someone until they start squirming. It's quite amusing and can tell you a lot about a person. "The killing curse" I replied confidently, not showing how uncomfortable the last demonstration made me.

He set the spider down on my desk and raised his wand. Neither of us had broken eye contact. "Avada Kedavra". The spider now lay limp in front of my eyes, I could see it out of my peripheral vision. But I kept staring at him. Something was off about him, but I guess they don't call him Mad-eye for nothing.

"Hey you okay? You looked like you were going to be sick" George asked me.

"I'm fine. Don't worry about it." George returned back to his work. I was thankful he didn't feel the need to pry.

Later that day I had Herbology with the Hufflepuffs and Care of Magical creatures with the Slytherins. Sadly, it seemed none of my friends had decided to take those classes so I was stuck alone. Not that I minded. I quickly befriended other people in my house and the accompanying houses in each lesson. Yet, in my head I couldn't help but think about the upcoming adventure with the twins.
