I didn't have long to dwell on my feelings for George because the next day we had to make urgent plans to get Harry from his Aunt's house. Apparently there had been some sort of dementor attack and now he was in trouble with the ministry. After much debate, it was decided that I would go get him along with Remus, Tonks, Mad-eye, and a few other witches and wizards. I thought that this was quite a lot of people, but I wasn't going to complain because I was finally doing something important.
We got his family out of the house based on some amazing-lawn achievement awards show. I can't believe they are so daft that they actually believed that. When we got there, we quickly packed up Harry's things and started riding. It was frigid this high in the sky, but we had to make sure no muggle could see us. I was behind Harry, which means I would be the first one hit in a sneak attack. Luckily, no one came.
When we got back to headquarters, there was a meeting going on. Mrs. Weasley instructed Harry to go upstairs and greet everyone while I walked into the kitchen. Immediately, every single head turned my way.
"What? Why are you all looking at me like that"
"We found your mom, Margaret" McGonagall said from her seat.
"What?" I cried "Where is she? Why aren't we going now? What's the plan?"
"Calm down, Margaret" Sirius called across the table. "We can't go just yet. She's being kept at Malfoy Manor which is where Voldemort is staying. He won't let her go under any circumstances."
"Well that's not going to stop me" I scoffed, turning around to leave the house. I was blocked by Mr. Weasley and Kingsley Shacklebolt. "What do you think you are doing" I yelled at them.
"You can't go. The only people Voldemort wants more than your mom are you and Harry." Mr. Weasley replied.
"And why the hell would Voldemort want me? My family wasn't even here during the first wizarding war! What could he possibly want from us!" I cried. Tears were starting to form as I kept being blocked from seeing my mother.
Tonks guided me over to a chair and started rubbing circles on my back. We were pretty good friends now. I could tell she felt bad for me. So did a lot of other people in the room.
"Miss Hughes, I am afraid your family connects with Voldemort way back. You see, the reason you were allowed to come to Hogwarts is because your grandmother went here. While she was at Hogwarts, she dated Tom Riddle. Tom was infatuated with your grandmother, who you are the spitting image of by the way. She broke up with him once she realized his plans. You see, Tom Riddle is better known as Lord Voldemort. After she broke up with him, he relentlessly chased her down trying to win her back. Personally, I don't think Voldemort is capable of love. This was just obsession. She faked her own death and created an alias when she moved to the US. Like your mother, your grandmother married a muggle and never used magic because she was trying to hide from Voldemort and his followers. Unfortunately, your grandmother died quite young as I'm sure you remember. So he went after her daughter. He wants revenge on your family." Dumbledore told me.
"What. the fuck. Why-" I stopped myself. Voldemort wanted revenge on my family because my grandma broke up with him. "So I can't go after her. But someone can. There has to be a way to get her-"
"I'm afraid there isn't. She is heavily guarded by the most loyal death eaters." Snape said. He's an inside man for the order. He pretends to be a death eater and gets all the information.
"Aren't you considered one of his most loyal followers, professor?" I said snarkily. "So why can't you volunteer and just let her escape, maybe hit yourself with a spell to make it more believable? Or I don't know, find some way to help her out!"
"You know that would compromise my position, which would be detrimental to the order. It's not that easy." Snape replied with a snarl on his face. I glared at him. He glared back. It wasn't until Dumbledore suggested that I should go upstairs that I stopped. I marched straight out of the room, slamming the door extra hard on my way out. I walked angrily up to my room; luckily, everyone was greeting Harry and were distracted. I locked the door and ran over to my trunk. I started chucking anything I could grab at the wall, letting all my anger and frustration out.
I heard a crack behind me which made me jump. The twins. I turned around and gave them a death stare before I returned to throwing things.
"Woah there, Mags. That's a bit aggressive, don't you think, George?" I heard Fred say to his twin. I didn't care. I wasn't going to acknowledge anyone in this house.
"I think we made the right call to not unlock the door. Wouldn't want to younger ones thinking this is acceptable behavior. They are quite impressionable you know" George said back to Fred.
"hardy har har. You two are just so funny. Now why don't you apparate out of here and leave me alone?" I had ran out of things to throw and was just plain tired now, so I sat on the edge of my bed. George tried to sit down next to me, but I threw his hand off my shoulder and moved away.
"Mag, what's wrong. And don't say nothing because based on the amount of things on the floor right now I can tell something is wrong" George said.
"Everything's wrong, George. The order claims to be doing stuff, but what have they done? Everyone here is a massive hypocrite who doesn't care about anyone else." I turned away as I felt angry tears start filling my eyes. I felt George slide closer to me as Fred sat on the edge of the bed.
George engulfed me in a hug, and that was my breaking point. "Did I tell you they found my mom? And they're doing NOTHING. Apparently it's not worth the risk. And I'm banned from any further outings because apparently Voldemort has some revenge plan for my family"
Before either of them could respond, Mrs. Weasley announced that dinner was ready.
"I'm going to go grab us some dinner, I'll be right back" Fred announced as he left the room.
"I'm going to bring her to our room, Fred. That way Ginny and Hermione can stay here." George sat up and I reluctantly followed him. When we got to the twin's room, I plopped down face first. George kept trying to console me, but right now I'd rather do anything else than talk about how much of a disappointment the order is.
"Kiss me George." I said confidently, sticking my head up.
"Wwwhat?" George said, taken aback by my sudden request. A little blush found its way to his cheeks.
"Kiss me." I sat up and pressed my lips delicately to his. He was stunned for a moment, but then returned the kiss. I put one hand on the back of his neck and the other in his hair as I moved towards him. The kiss became more passionate between us until George pulled his lips away from mine.
"Don't stop" I said, trying to kiss him again.
"Yes, Mags. You don't actually want to kiss me right now. You just want a distraction. That's all. I think it's best if we stop now." I rolled my eyes, but I knew he was right. I couldn't get over the hurt I felt in his voice, however. Or the fact that, like the other night, I missed the feeling of him on my lips.
Instead of kissing him, I settled into him, my head against his chest. When Fred brought back up dinner, he told us about the huge fight that happened downstairs about Harry and the information he deserves. Fred stayed for some of it, but left with the excuse that he needed to bring George and I something to eat since he already knew most of the information . I didn't mention what happened a few minutes prior to Fred, and neither did George. I was thankful for that. I ate quickly. I don't remember what happened next, but when I woke up, I was nestled against George's chest. George's breathing was steady and even. He had a slight smile on his face and his arm was wrapped around me. I realized that this was the calmest I had felt in a while.
