It's All Over

I arrived at Tonks' mother's house. I had only met Andromeda a few times, but she seemed nice. I gave myself 10 seconds to prepare before knocking on the door.

"Margaret, please come in. Teddy's sleeping right now. Would you like something to drink?"

"I'll have some tea. Doesn't matter what kind. "

"Of course. May I ask what happened to you? I know that everyone was summoned to Hogwarts for a battle." Of course she wants to know. Her daughter comes by and urgently leaves her son. Then a few hours later her daughter's friend shows up on her doorstep, bloody and dirty.

"Mrs. Tonk, I think you should sit down."

"Please, call me Andromeda."

"Alright." I sat down on the couch next to her. "There was a battle. Everyone fighting against You-Know-who and the death eaters. That's why I look like this. But that's not why I'm here. Andromeda...I'm so sorry. Tonks is dead. I don't know how. I don't know who. I wish I did. I wish I could have saved her." Tears were welling up in my eyes again as I recounted the news.

Andromeda let out a choked scream. Tears started rolling down her cheeks as she heard that her only child was dead with her husband. I did nothing but hold her hand. Both of us bonding over our grief. "Is Remus..." she asked.

"Yes. I'm here because Tonks asked me to take care of Teddy in the case that they both..." I couldn't finish. I sat there for a long time with Andromeda, both of us crying.

Eventually a third cry joined us. Teddy was awake. "Would you like to come see him?" Andromeda asked me, wiping the tears from her eyes. It didn't work.

"Of course." I went upstairs with her to see the child. He had seemed to settle on teal hair for now. He was absolutely adorable. Andromeda carried him downstairs then gave him to me.

I held Teddy in my lap. "I can't believe she's gone." Is all I said.

"I know. Do you think...do you think I could still see him even though you're raising him." Andromeda asked me.

"Of course! He's still your grandchild. You can come see him whenever you want. I'll give you my address. And, I'm thinking you should have him for holidays. Even if George wants to spend time with his family, I'll drop Teddy off with you. You're his real family. Besides, I'm sure Mrs. Weasley will be okay with it" I told her. And I meant it. Andromeda deserves to know her grandson; I would never take him away from her.

"That would be wonderful."Andromeda cracked a small smile. " What about your family though dear?"

"I don't have any family. My mother died tonight, but I stopped talking to her a while ago. Tonks was probably my closest family. She was like a sister to me."

Andromeda reached for my hand again. She could see how much Tonks meant to me. Tonks really was my closest family. Sure, I had George, but he was my fiancé. Fred was there too, but he was family with George. I had all my other friends, but none of us shared the same bond as Tonks and I.

"Are you taking him tonight?" Andromeda finally broke the silence.

"Actually, I was wondering if he could stay here. I don't have any of the supplies for a kid. I wasn't really expecting this you know?" I told her.

"Of course, that would be fine. Would you like to stay here too?" She asked me, taking Teddy back.

"I have to go see some people. But would you like to come shopping with me tomorrow? I have no idea how to raise a kid or anything that they would need." I really didn't. I was worried I was going to be a bad mom and break my promise to Tonks.

"I would love that. How about we meet here tomorrow at 9? I'll have Teddy ready."

"It's a plan." With that I went to the Burrow after stopping by Shell Cottage for something. I figured George would end up there. If not, his family would know where he was.

I had spent so much time with Andromeda that it was early in the morning when I got to the Weasley's. But no one was asleep. I knocked on the door and an exhausted looking Molly opened it.

"Margaret, you're alright." She gave me a squeeze.

"yes, I'm sorry for disappearing. I had a personal matter to attend to." I said.

"Come inside, I'll make you some tea. Everyone's asleep in the living room. Well, almost everyone. Bill and Fleur went back to their house-they're okay and hope you're well. George is over by the window."

I walked in and went to the living room. I saw Ginny, Harry, Hermione, and Ron passed out on the couch. Hermione and Ron were cuddling and Ginny had her head on Harry's shoulder. Charlie was in an arm chair talking to Mr. Weasley. Percy was sleeping across from them. And sitting by the wall was George.

I walked over to him. "Hi George" I didn't ask him how he was. I knew the answer. He was miserable. I could tell he wanted to join Fred, but was holding on. So I did what I would want done with me. I just sat there and held him. I didn't ask him questions. I didn't make him talk. He sunk into my chest as he relaxed, but he never fell asleep.

I opened the box I had grabbed from Shell Cottage. It contained all the pictures I had taken over the years. I removed all the pre-Hogwarts ones from the pile unless they had my mother in them. Then I started looking through them.

I had a picture of my mom at the beach with my dad. This was back when we were semi happy. I had all the annual holiday pictures as well. There were pictures of my mom in the hospital. Then there were ones of us unpacking our flat in London, excited to start our new life.

There were all the pictures I took with Fred. There was the first one I ever had of him and George with their beards in the great hall. There's pictures of us in our quidditch uniform and pulling pranks. Pictures of us at parties and sitting in the common room. A picture of him and George outside their shop with huge grins on their face. They were so proud of themselves that day. On their birthday, at the Yule Ball, at Bill's wedding. A million memories that caused tears to roll down my eyes. I could fee George's tears soak into my shirt as he looked through the pictures with me.

I also looked through all the pictures with Tonks. There was my favorite series that catalogued our hair dying experience. A picture of us at her wedding. Her holding Teddy and then me holding Teddy. Pictures of us goofing off and at Christmas. Various photo shoots. It reminded me that I needed to tell George something.

"I'm going shopping with Andromeda tomorrow. Teddy is our responsibility now. I guess we will have a child after all. You don't have to come. I know you're hurting. I am too. Fred, Tonks, and my mom all dead in one day. It's a bit much. So I understand how you feel. But let's just promise each other one thing. Just one thing. That no matter what, we'll stay alive."

He didn't say anything for a while. But I could feel myself drifting off with my arms wrapped rightly around him.

Then I heard, in the faintest whisper, "I promise Mags."

*AN: Thank you so much for dedicating the time to read this! This is my first ever fanfiction and I'm so happy for all the support. I'm writing a sequel called American Teen-The Sequel that will cover their lives after the battle of Hogwarts. Spoiler-it will end much happier than this one. Please give it a read*
