Jesse's pov:
Pulling into the drop off/pick up area at Sophie's school, I glance around at the students, hoping to find her amongst them. I spent the whole day at home searching online for any job openings, looking through what bills need to be paid first, and trying to come up with a plan to keep us financially stable until I find work.
As a young adult they always tell you how to get a job, but never how to handle losing one.
A few moments later I finally spot my sister walking out the front entrance, so I honk the car once to catch her attention. She looks up curiously at the sound but quickly sees me and picks up her pace. I notice a small group of teens talking to each other and when Sophie passes by, they give her strange looks and start whispering. I guess she noticed too cause she puts her head down and jogs towards my car.
What the fuck did they say?
Once she opens the passenger door and gets in, a relieved sigh escapes her lips. "Hi Jay jay" she greets and puts on the seatbelt, waiting for me to drive. When the car doesn't move Sophie looks up at me confused, "what's wrong?"
"What did those kids say about you?" I nod towards the group, making her realize that I witnessed their actions.
"It's nothing. Let's just go home please." She avoids my gaze to look down at her lap where she plays with her fingers. One of her nervous habits. Deciding to question her about it later at home, I drive away from the school and onto the main road. I allow the radio to fill up the silence by turning on her favorite CD and increasing the volume.
Throughout the drive, Sophie sings quietly to herself as her attention is drawn to the window next to her. Mentally going over the ideas of how I can keep a roof above us, I'm worried about how she'll react. Thing is, if i had allowed Sophie to get a job like she offered, everything could stay the same but I really don't want this to be her problem. I'm her legal guardian now and it's also just my job as a big brother to care for her. It just sucks how we're going to have to make some sacrifices in order for me to keep that promise.
Seeing a diner up ahead, I'm starting to crave a burger so i pull into their parking lot and look for an empty space. Sophie furrows her brow at the detour, "we're gonna eat here?"
"Mhm. I'm hungry and don't feel like cooking today. C'mon, let's go." I park the car and we both get out, walking to the front doors where I hold it open for her to enter first. She thanks me just as the hostess welcomes us and asks how many in our party. "Just two" I respond and the lady nods, guiding us to a table in the far left of the establishment.
"Someone will be with you shortly" she excuses herself after leaving the menus on our table.
Watching how Sophie looks down at the list of foods with her hands under the table and biting her bottom lip, I take a second to think about how to approach this situation. I know she's going fo freak out when I say it but part of me also knows that she's gonna be understanding. I just don't want to see her cry again.
"Mi amor?" She hums in response and looks up at me. Silently, I lean forward and hold out my hand on the table for her to grab. "I have something to discuss with you" I say once her hand is in mine. Giving it a squeeze for my own comfort, I rip off the metaphorical band aid and tell her my idea.
"I've been thinking the we should sell the house." She frowns and opens her mouth to speak but I beat her to it. "Let me explain first, okay? I checked how much money I've got saved and thankfully we'll have enough to get by for another three months. But, then I thought, why do we need such a big house? It's just you and me living there and we don't take up all that space."
