By the time we were finished eating dessert I was exhausted and decided to crash at Dina's place rather than going home with my mom.

"Are you sure you don't want to spend the night here Christina? You don't have to drive home if you're tired." Carla says hugging my mom.

"No no it's fine Carla really. Bye honey. I love you." My mom says before kissing me and leaving.

"I think she just wanted time to herself tonight. She's always at work so I'm sure sometime in a quiet house will do her some good." Carla mumbles and I nod before making my way up the stairs. When I got in front of Dina's door I made a U-turn and headed outside. I grabbed the blanket on the yard chair and draped it around me once I got comfortable and watched the stars for a while before I remembered a faint memory.

*flashback*
"Daddy." I say looking at him through the window. Looking around I opened the backyard door and walked to sit next to him. Noticing me he puts me in his lap and asks why I wasn't in bed yet.

"I was waiting for you to come sing to me. Why are you talking to the sky?"I ask and he laughs.

"I'm not talking to the sky honey. I'm talking to the stars. See that star right there? That's my mother. I was just saying goodnight to her." I make a face of confusion.

"Grandma's not a star daddy. She's on the other side of life remember." Then he smiles and points back at the sky.

"You see how it shines brighter than the other stars?" He asks and I nod. "That's your grandmother and that one right there is you grandfather." He says pointing to the one next to it. "You see sweet pea, whenever our loved ones die they become stars. They watch over us and you can always talk to them."

"Stars only come out at night though. What if I want to talk to them during the day?" I ask him.

"Well you can still talk to them because they can still hear you but the nighttime is when they can see you as well. You see how bright grandma and grandpa are? It's because she's smiling really hard at you right now. So she's always around but at night is when you can see each other." And I nod.

"Can I talk to grandma and grandpa now daddy?" I ask and he nods yes. Then I start telling her about my day and how I just started the 3rd grade and my amazing best friend Dina Moresin.
*flashback over*

Taking a  deep breath I pull my phone and call my dad. Hearing it ring a few times I go to hang up but he answers.

"Hello?"

"Hey dad. Happy thanksgiving." I say quietly still watching the stars.

"Happy thanksgiving to you too sweet pea. How are you?" He says.

"Fine and you?"

"I'm good, old but good." He jokes and I lightly laugh.

"Well that's good. Have you spoken to mom today?" I ask.

"Yeah earlier this morning. She said you were still sleeping though so I didn't get a chance to talk to you." I nod even though he couldn't see me.

I knew mom didn't tell me because she didn't want to upset me or make me sad because those were the only two emotions I ever felt when I spoke to him.

I knew this phone call might've caught him by surprise since I was the one calling first but it was always something about the stars that made me a little sad every time I saw them and the only person who I wanted to talk to right now, was him.

"Okay well goodnight dad." I say after a moment of silence.

"Wait honey are you sure you're okay?" He asks.
