Luke's POV:
A few weeks have passed by and I'm still confused about my feelings. Do I like her as a friend or do I like like her?
Mary and I have gotten close within the last few weeks. Her friend Sarah had to move so now I'm the closest thing she has to a friend. When she first moved, I felt really bad about Mary having to be all by herself, so I talked to the school and after about a week they let me change my schedule.
I've been teased about it, but I don't care. I just didn't want my friend to be alone.
Right now I'm waiting for her at her locker since it's close to mine. I lean against the wall and wait. When I see her I walk over to her.
"Hey." I say
"Hi."
"So I heard your birthday's in a few days." Actually I already knew that, but I didn't want to come off as weird.
"Yeah."
"Are you doing anything?"
"Not really, I'll probably just stay at home."
"Oh well I was wondering if you'd- Um if you'd want to, um... Would you like to go somewhere?"
She stares at me for what feels like forever "I'd love too."
"Really? Um,I mean, cool. So Friday then?"
"Yeah."
"Ok, I have to go to my locker, see you in class."
Mary's POV:
Luke just asked me if I wanted to go somewhere with him for my birthday and I said yes.
It's Wednesday now, so I have two days to prepare.
We're sitting in math when he asks for my number.
"It's customary to have your friends number." He says
Of course, I write it down for him.
Wednesday and Thursday go by pretty fast, and all of a sudden it's Friday.
"Mom, I won't be coming home after school today." I say
"Why not?"
"I'm going somewhere with my friends."
"Ok, but be back by curfew."
"But mom, 11:00 is so early for someone my age. Can it be 1:00?"
"Fine, since it's your birthday. But I swear, if any babies are made tonight, you and the father are dead!"
"Mom!"
"I'm only kidding, I trust you to use protection."
"Oh my God mom, I gotta go to school."
The day goes by pretty fast and soon I'm walking out of the front doors of the school. I see Luke leaning against a column, talking on the phone.
"Ok, I've got to go now. I love you too mom. Ok- ok bye." He smiles at me "Hello gorgeous!"
"Hello handsome." we don't really mean it. We've taken to saying this, but in the friendly way.
"Are you ready?" he asks me.
"Yeah, where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
So we walk to his car and get in. I expect him to take the turn to go downtown, where all of the restaurants are but he doesn't. Instead he turns to get into the highway.
"So, does your family know that you're going somewhere with me?"
"Well, I told my mom that I'm going out with friends."
"What about Ashton?"
"No, I didn't tell him."
He lets out a sigh of relief "Good."
I don't know what he means by that, but I don't ask.
He exits off if the interstate and drives to this restaurant. We walk in and it's really nice inside, I'm sure we look out of place here.
A guy in a suit comes up to us.
"Do you have a reservation?"
"Yeah, um Hemmings."
"First name?"
"Luke."
"Right this way."
We sit at a table near the back with a candle in the middle.
"This thing's fucking making me nervous." I say. I blow out the candle.
"Hm." Luke says with a smirk.
"What?" I ask
"Nothing."
A young waiter, about our age comes over and asks us if we'd like wine.
"Yeah sure." Luke says
"May I see your IDs please?"
"Oh, I'm not-"
"Remember Mary? You had me hang onto yours."
He pulls out two IDs and hands them to the waiter.
"Dude, I'm not stupid." he whispers
We just stare at him.
"Is this your girlfriend?" he says
"Oh well-" Luke starts to say
"I'll let you guys have some wine, but don't ask anyone else but me."
He pours the wine and leaves.
"How did you-"
"I have my ways." he says smiling
Luke's POV:
Mary seems to be enjoying the date- I mean birthday surprise so far.
We drink a couple of glasses of wine each, even though I'm more of a beer guy. I decide to stop when I start feeling a little weird, since I'm driving. The rest of the date goes pretty well, but I still have one more surprise.
"Um, so my mom's out of town, but I was wondering if you'd like to go to my place?"
"Sure."
The check comes and I pay since it's not good for the girl to have to pay, especially when it's her birthday.
"There's still more." I say
We drive back to my house and go in. Then we go upstairs and I just flip on the TV.
"We really need to find something better to do when we hang out." she says
"Is that so?" I say
I lay down on the bed and she sits next to me. We sit in silence for a while.
"What's the rest of the surprise?" she asks me
'This is it' I think 'this is when our friendship ends.'
