I squint and shrivel my nose as I concentrate. No flames appear, no sparks at all. I breathe in and out deeply, using a technique my teacher gave me to help me blow fire. Still nothing. I sigh, once again, my attempts at magic fail.

I limp to school, my leg still burning from when Carp hurt it yesterday.
Mrs. Luna glances at my injury. with a concerned gaze. I lean over to groom it.
"You had that wound of yours yesterday. I thought you'd have it looked at by now. You need to get it checked out. It looks infected."

I sit in the hallway, waiting for the bell to ring. I watch a black and white cat walk through the school, looking around wildly as if he hasn't gone to school before. As my eyes follow him, I notice his limp. His right front leg is covered in dried blood. The fur has been caked down, pressed into his leg. It looks painful, swollen, and infected. I get up and intercept him in his path. "You really should have that looked at," I tell him, nodding towards his leg.
He stops walking and glares at me. Now that I'm closer to him, I can see his eyes. Their bright blue irises full of the sadness and sorrow of his soul. His ears are slightly down turned, the equivalent of a cat's frown. Looking at him, I can tell that he's had a hard life. Poor kitten.
I gain a desire to be his friend, to help him and lift him up.
"I got it yesterday; it will take time to heal," he finally says, replying to my comment about his injury. He limps around me and disappears into the crowd of students.
