- Emerald -

I watch Brittney as she opens the little bottle and drinks the potion. A vision flashes in my mind, a vision of flames. Brittney, why? You don't have magic, you never will. Get over it, let yourself enjoy life, your lack of magic shouldn't stop you from happiness. You have a much better life than Ocean does.

The possibilities flash in my mind, every one of them ending in disaster. Every one of them but one. One possibility where I hatch out of my egg early, even though the insides of my ears are not fully developed. A possibility where I end up deaf for the rest of my life.

- Ocean -

One of my mother's eggs shakes and rattles. I gaze at it, feeling excitement towards meeting my little sibling. A second egg start to hatch, while cracks appear on the first egg. It splits in two, both sides landing on the ground and shattering into hundreds of pieces. A wet kitten stands in the mist. His little ears pressed against his head and his eyes still closed.

"Awww, he's sooo cute!" cries my brother Seaweed, who stands next to me, "can I name him?"

"Be my guest. I have no interest in naming little nuisance fur-balls," Coral, my sister who is a miniature copy of Mom, says. I've never been close to her. She reminds me a bit of Carp. She's never hurt me physically, but she can be really rude. I've learned to avoid her when possible.

"I name him Sandy. It fits him, right?"

"Sure," Coral replies.

"I think it fits him. His brown fur has a sort of sandy tint to it," I add to my sister's vague response.

A crack sounds in the air, our attention is immediately returned to the other eggs. The other hatching one explodes, egg shells flying everywhere.

The kitten stands in the heart of the combustion, with her wings spread out wide. Clearly, she got impatient and used her wings of get free.

She sets her piercing emerald green eyes on me. I give a startled gasp. Her eyes are open, even though a kitten's eyes aren't fully developed at hatching, but it looks as though she can see perfectly fine. Her eyes are also the wrong color. Cat's eyes are blue when they hatch, but hers are green.

I remember learning in my history class about a cat named Emerald. I can only recall one fact I learned about her: when she was alive, her eyes were bright green, just like the kitten in front of me.

"Emerald," I say, "that's the perfect name for you."
