- Ocean -
The waves ripple across the lake. A huge one, the size of a tsunami rises up and falls back down into the water, creating large splashes all around the whole lake. The water's strange behavior due to the mer cat dragons. They manipulate the water, playing with it, using it to swim faster, and plain old show off. However, most of the ripples created aren't created by nature, but by the students in the mer cat dragon school, practicing their magic.
School... Everyone is supposed to go right? Not me... I can't... I've tried...
I dive into the water. Hunger courses through me, compelling me to eat. I swim, pumping my scaly tail with quick, small movements. Bubbles form all around me in a white cloud.
I used to have a dream of joining the school's swim team. I'd dream of being the fastest swimmer there. That dream had to be put in the trash.
I will be stuck uneducated, not able to read, practically an orphan for the rest of my life, I sigh, I wish my life could be different.
A large bright orange fish swims through some seaweed a little ways away from me. I stop paddling my tail and float in place, watching the fish. It happily nibbles the seaweed, unaware of me. I dash forward with one big motion, biting my prey on its neck.
My lungs start to burn. Air. I swim towards the surface. Reaching it, I savor the sky, the clouds, and the air, oh, the wonderful air. I enjoy it a little longer before diving back into the water.
When I reach the bank, I launch myself on the land. My shimmering dark blue tail shifts and changes to the hind legs and tail of a cat. Wings also sprout and fan out from my back.
The sand sparkles in the sun, burning my eyes. It forces me to squint as I gorge myself on my meal. Once finished, I toss the remains in the water.
"That's littering," says a voice, making me freak out and jump.
A girl cat dragon about my age giggles. Her bright yellow eyes are cheerful and also piercing as she studies me. I return her glare.
"You littered," she repeats.
"So?" I reply.
"It makes the water gross," she says.
"Um... Shouldn't you be at school?" she changes the subject.
"Shouldn't you?"
"I'm sick."
"You don't look it."
"I'm not. I'm only pretending." She waits in silence for a while until she adds, "What's your name?"
"Stop asking questions! Okay? It's none of your business!"
She stops talking and slips back into the water. Her dark purple tail the last thing I see of her as she swims away.
